    hello all, first time poster.
i am into my 7th month now and driving for a montreal based company that has a terminal in toronto canada.
i got the job rather quickly, 1 month after i got my license. company had about 200 drivers 7 months ago but they've since added a bunch more. i do otr LTL loads which i quite like. the days im doing deliveries go by much quicker than the days on the road. i got hired based off one 5 min test drive, 1 day "training" toronto to montreal and back (1200 kms) my first load was a week after interview and it was to dallas with 10 deliveries , and solo. i was supposed to follow another driver to understand the whole , crossing the border/fueling at a truck stop/using the eld/truck stop etiquette and all but i lost the driver at the border when i got pulled in for xray, counter and dock. lucky me all on the first trip. so i got that experience quick. now mind you i didnt get hired completely based on incompitance but also alot of skill as both the test drivee and trainee both reported back very positive reviews. now that im 7 months in, ive come to realize or atleast feel like a good asset to the company. dispatch all seem to recognize my name and voice in each call considering they deal with 200+ drivers. they give me 10-18 deliveries for each trip. and backload is sometimes FTL or LTL aswell.
ive worked really hard and have always had a really good work ethique. the only time i spend at home is just to do a reset and im back on w.e load they find me, so far ive covered 30 states and most recently done a trip to LA , also solo. im gone 5 to 8 days most trips. as far as the pay goes. i get paid 0.50/mile thats canadian currency btw. + $50 to cross border, $20 per delivery for first 3 and then its $40 each including pickups. +.05/mile for covid pay. cellphone allowance of 75 a month. and $15/hr waiting time after 2 hours.
my pay hasnt changed since the begining. i have done 100k miles in the 7 months. i am making about 10-11k a month (canadian) as an incorporated driver. so after taxes is about 8-9k a month. i was able to save most of my earnings and now am wondering if i should become an owner operator as soon as im able to.
will i make more as an o/o in canada? do the companies pay for fuel because the way i see it, am i gonna make the same amount i am making now but with more stress/headache especially if i pay fuel. also i do like the fact that im doing ltl, i enjoy it and that each trip is somewhere new and different
    any info would help.
    thanks

If you’re earning good money and happy , I’d stay where you’re at .

sounds like you’re doing pretty good.
I’m in the states so it familiar with what is good earnings for Canadian drivers but $8-9 k per month sounds good .
And the milage and detention and stop pay sounds good to me

even better if the company treats you with respect.

Its seems that you earning good money running otr. One thing you would want to look at is how much is the rate per mile with the company you would for as a O/O. The highest I've seen with a Company was out of Vaughan, On. That paid $2.15/mile. Most companies seem to average $1.30 to $1.45/mile giving a fuel subsidy however now a days they aren't even stating how much that is when they use to 6 months ago but a lower mileage rate. I've even seen a few companies advertise now $1.59/mile including paid plates, Insurance, All Tolls, IFTA etc.. but again fuel discount without stating whether its $0.30/liter or gallon or 20% etc. This is misleading because when a driver is running their truck more it makes a huge difference on the books. Personally imo you're doing great with $1863.90 (running Toronto to Montreal and back 1200 km = 6000 km * 0.6213 = 3727.8 mi @ $0.50 = $1863.90) even when realizing you do more & just basing your annually income off of that its $96,922.80 without any worry about Truck repairs, maintenance or issues oppose owning your own truck. I feel as a driver you have to consider the overall cash flow & weigh out the problems that go along with being an o/o. Companies will sell anyone a story but never tell you about the issues along the way. I'm running similar back n' forth from Toronto to Montreal but at a unizoned company in a day cab so we're in a 5 star Marriot 2 Nights per week avg. $1600/week. I've considered O/O but will only consider the right opportunities if they occur and the main thing is $2.15 plus per mile including plates, fuel discounts etc. Because I personally don't want problems with a used truck that was overhauled. In my driving career I've had to much issues with older trucks including a lot of blown turbos so new with a full motor and transmission warranty is essential.

You probably won't do better as an owner op until you get into specialized freight or start building a fleet.

The job is the same no matter where you go. Sit in the seat and drive. The difference for me is the ppl I work with. If I don't like them, I don't like the job. Lucky for me, I adore my fleet managers, and love them like family. There's not enough money to work for a place you hate.

    I’d stay where you’re at.
Not easy to find a place you like. A job you like.
O/O brings risk. Also a lot more work.

I’ve gone through 6 companies in 3 years. Just plain intolerable.
