I can say it wasn't for me... the only eye test I had was at the doctor's for med card or pre employment physical,

I cant remember. He has perfect vision in one eye and terrible vision in the other. Has been a safe non cdl , yet COMMERCIAL driver for past 7 years. Has a good DOT physical, but will likely fail a DMV machine eye exam, so not sure if required or not
-
in Calif. if you are turning in your long for. to DMV you so t take a. eye exam.
if you are renewing your drivers license, the renewal form you get in mail will dictate if you have to do an eye exam -
no he just passed his CDL driving test, he wanted to know when he goes to the DMV will he be forced to take a eye test at the machine at the counter?
-
In Ca. it's possible. Customer is there , machine is ready, let's test him. Also, they use the eye charts overhead hanging behind the clerk. But, a passed DOT physical in hand will probably get him thru.

Any time I've went to pick up a license at the DMV they test my eyes, it's standard practice but varies by the DMV staff.
Don't know how it's all done now with Covid, everything has changed for the most part. I've taken drug tests with the masks on and asked the nurse, how do you know that it's me? She was like" of course it's you, why would somebody try to cheat a drug test" and I was like "rriiiiight" -
Simple answer, NO.
They do not perform eye exam when picking up your new license or when renewed. They are not accountable for that. That is for the dot exam and medical card when it gets put on file -
so I have one driver saying they DO require a eye examine in the machine at the counter, and the next driver saying they do not.... A federal exemption for the eye test can take 6 MONTHS or more, so I want to help my buddy get past this last step (he already drives a non CDL air brake cdl for the past 7 years without incident).
He has his approved DOT MED CARD eye exam in hand, but I think he might fail the countertop machine if required. -
Well its a good question!
Every time I have renewed my license I have been tested.
As well as obviously being tested for my 2 year DOT physical card.
So in my experience, yes.N00bLaLoosh, Bean Jr. and TowHaul Thank this.
