Why I left FL before the end of my first year. Unbelievable that NYC is more affordable to me than FL (except those pesky tolls)

This is why I've never been a big fan of leaving equipment unattended in hotel parking lots for extended periods of time. Anything that ain't bolted down is likely to grow legs and walk off at some point. (Maybe even stuff that is bolted down.). A guy I know just last week had his breakaway battery stolen out of the bed of his truck while it was sitting at the local roach-motel where a lot of haulers hang out. He was in a pinch so I sold him mine but I said yeah I don't ever do that. You park at the truck stop and only step away from it long enough to eat and take a shower and you're not as likely to have trouble like that since they know you could be walking back out to your truck at any time, and not many thieves are willing to risk messing with trucks if they know the driver is in there.

Some of them definitely are losers/lowlifes, particularly in the under 26k segment where a commercial license isn't even a barrier to entry. I talked to a couple outfits that put drivers in little truck setups and the pay was insulting...like $.30 cpm on a 1099 bad. I was like ah-ha, so that's how you afford all your fancy houses and toys...you've getting rich hiring a bunch of desperados to haul your loads for you practically for free.

I woke up one morning and saw my winch battery half pulled out.
Caught someone checking to see if my ramps were locked on.
Had someone sleep in one of the cars I was hauling that I forgot to lock.
Came back from a shower and saw a guy walking towards my truck with a tire iron I guess to take my spares.

I always make sure my stuff is locked and cars are locked now before I go to sleep. I'd hate to have to bash some a hole's head in for this kinda crap.

And you'll end up in way more trouble for that than anybody trying to steal goodies off your truck ever would. It's a modern societal problem I guess you could call it. Back in the old west everybody knew they'd risk getting shot and nobody caring if they got caught messing with other people's stuff. Nowadays your best defense is careful strategy and the "ounce of prevention" mentality as most thieves are just criminals of opportunity. Some bum sleeping in the car though tells me that was not a good place to park.
