My company has a regular run into Melville NY and out. Sometimes to JFK or a nearby warehouse in Jamaica. I’ve been doing it a couple years. I have asked questions here before and got good feedback from you all.
I sometimes go in over the GWB to Throgs Neck to LIE…sometimes over Goethals and Verrazano, BQE to LIE.
Thursday, I went in and was on the BQE headed from the Verrazano towards the LIE. I know to ignore the 12’7 warning to exit at Atlantic Ave. The odd thing this trip was a lighted message board was set up and said ‘Overheight truck inspection ahead’. I got nervous but didn’t exit. Didn’t see any ‘inspection’ going on. My question is… is there a effort to stop ‘overheight’ trucks from continuing on the BQE? Do you think they are taking 12’7” literally?
Another question… traffic has been awful again since everything is back open. Those are the only 2 routes I take to Melville. Is there another route that would save any time? A ‘local driver secret’ route? Or is it just a gut it out in traffic like the rest of us type situation? I know, no parkways…but something like the ‘Sunrise Highway’ or something. Just trying to increase my local knowledge. I grew up in Jersey and know that well but NYC is a whole different creature…..
To the NYC Drivers…. A couple questions…

Might have been misspelled overweight/ they been trying to bust R permit trucks on that for a minute.
You be disapponted with the sunrise highway there.. it dont turn into highway til after where you’d get off.wis bang and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
It’s very possible I misread ‘overheight’ and ‘overweight’
I’ve seen the warning about over weight trucks on the BQE going the opposite way….NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
New York is definitely something else. I think I delivered ice cream around exit 5 or 6 off of 95... exit was coned off and I was not going to be exploring. So much overhead stuff that you have to go under that isn’t marked...

It's possible they were inspecting trucks that took the exit. I read about a drug checkpoint set up that way. Out in a rural area they put a sign saying "last exit before drug checkpoint" and then searched all the cars that got off the exit.
austinmike and tallguy66 Thank this. -
I was figuring it was misspelled on the sign, but i was wrong:

They don't specify what "overheight" is though. 13'6" is the national standard height, maybe they mean trucks above that height.
That would be my understanding, Occifer.Woodys, Flat Earth Trucker, austinmike and 2 others Thank this. -
But the sign right after this was this one. So that’s what made me curious what they consider over height….
please ignore the no trucks in left lane sign hahahaaustinmike Thanks this. -
Is the BQE ever not a parking lot?
It almost seems pointless to even have speed limit signs posted.Flat Earth Trucker and ncmickey Thank this.
