I started at 21 with CRST went through their training left after 3 months of OTR team driving went solo with a small regional company pay was great I ####ed that up went to Swift drive for them on a local Walmart account in Los Angeles for 6 months my backing skills are A1 due to that experience so didn’t have a hard time finding a new company to work for when I moved to TX I joined JB Hunt and been with them almost 2 yrs now I’m 24 going O/O. It’s been a journey but very much worth it I’ve been able to do and afford most things people our age can’t.

 

Nothing wrong with starting Local if you can find a Local Company to hire you. It’s a good way to get experience. OTR is a commitment, and has its Own set of challenges and frustrations. Driving is the easy part. I worked Local, Driving a Straight Truck for 7 yrs. Then TT for 3 yrs. before going regional. Driving Local, you learn fast how to maneuver a TT. Always worked 5 days. Even regional, I ran a dedicated 800 mile rd 3 times a week, for 7 yrs. Home twice during the week, and weekends off. Makes Life manageable, being able to make and keep plans. There’s more ways than 1 to skin a Cat. Sounds like You already have the License part figured out. You don’t necessarily have to follow the typical route. Going OTR with a Trainer, getting Indoctrinated by a Mega. Being young and in a relationship you care about, being gone might be tough. She’s busy with School now. But eventually things will change. Last 17 yrs. I’ve been Independant. Started working every other weekend, now I prefer working weekends, and Taking time off during the week. I’ll work 10 days, sometimes 7 weeks at a time. Take off as much as I can afford to. Like I said, things change. Shouldn’t have to sacrifice a Life, to earn a living. Unfortunately many OTR Jobs demand all of your time. I quickly realized, it’s the Job that never ends. All consuming at times. Good Luck, anything’s possible. At your age, you’ve got a lot of opportunities. Probably many more options than you realize. Fact is, you can succeed at anything you put your mind to. Even things you might not think you can do now.
