You are in a very grey area.... race cars will be considered commercial use so you better have a CDL unless you can get plated as a RV.

CDL means commercial drivers license and if you are not doing anything commercial then you don’t need the CDL, regardless of the size of the vehicle. Again this varies state to state but Ohio does not and wherever your mom and dad are their state apparently does not as well, I believe some do.
Again, your home state regulations are what matters, regardless of where you travel.jason6541 Thanks this. -
The right person at the right Insurance company should know this. Heavy trucks have been a hobby niche for almost 50 years. Just because it is a truck doesn’t mean it’s still commercial. Just like a retired fire truck, ambulance, police car, or military truck being owned by a civilian. Many many people don’t have cdl and drive them anywhere and everywhere around the country for fun personal use.TTNJ Thanks this. -
I went the 'collector truck' route since that was the best fit for me with WA laws. I closed my construction business a few years ago but still wanted to keep the truck
There aren't mileage restrictions, I can pull a trailer, but it can't be used for commercial purposes anymore (fine with me!)Jackdonkey Thanks this. -
Race cars and horses. If there's prize money involved? Sponsorship?
Seems like official opinion can go either wayTTNJ Thanks this. -
Not just prize money and/or sponsorship.
If money changes hands at all it is commercial...I.e. entrance fees. -
Race cars are not considered commercial use. If that was the case every normal person driving a 1 ton pickup pulling a bumper pull trailer with their racecar to the local track would be illegal.

Race cars are commercial IF there is prize money or sponsorship involved. Like always, just because a cop doesn't want to enforce the law doesn't a regulation (or lack of) make,

Exactly what Zvar said....
A 1 ton does not meet the weight requirements for a CDL but I believe technically a CDL below a Class A would technically be required.
DOT # would absolutely be required.
