You are suppose to be keeping track of your mileage and fuel receipts in each province/state. You either write it down each time you cross a province/state line or use something like a GPS that keeps track/phone app/some ELD's. You then enter the numbers online at TRACS. You have to apply to enroll first before you get access to the self serve website.

We paid a company ~$25/month/truck to do it. They gave us a GPS tracking device to install on our trucks and the only other thing we had to do was forward our fuel bills to them. It was well worth the cost.

That monthly cost included some other things too, but I don't remember it all at the moment.

Our ELDs can generate a report that shows each truck by state and by miles - then I enter it into the IFTA software and it generates my IFTA, Carbon Tax, NY HUT, NM, KY mileage and payments.
You then go into Taxexcess - create the account and then just file online - Carbon Tax is CRA....- no need to pay anyone - takes 1/2 hr max doesn't matter how large your fleet is.
Just an excel chart from your Fuel card and the mileage

Do I need to use a spread sheet for this ? Or can I just type the numbers on the website for ifta in Alberta ? I’m new to this. I would hate to make an excel spread sheet. This would take up a lot of time. I would much appreciate a response thanks

Yes you physically type the numbers into it. It is very simple, they give you a table with all the states and provinces and you just type the amount in each box. You don't need any special software. I'm keeping track of mine on paper.

This just seems overwhelming at first. Own authority seems like lots of work

It can be, I am just starting out and there is lots to learn. You can pay people to do everything but I opted to save money and do it on my own. I even set up all my American authorities on my own, I still need to finish up a few things before I can cross the border. Once things are done and in place though you can focus on driving. Balancing self dispatching, invoicing, paperwork, driving etc is difficult in the beginning but I'm finding a routine. I still need to make a schedule/calendar for when things are due.

The freedom is nice in the end and you can make a lot of money. I'm only 6 weeks in working off Loadlink and just had a $12,300 week (gross). About $8000 after fuel
