Amazon likes that selling point of an 'open door policy' regarding pay negotiations, meaning each worker is welcome to come talk to the manager on a 1 on 1 basis and talk about their pay. Why do they like it? Because they know word spreads faster than fire. So if a percentage of workers go to management and get shot down for a raise, the rest won't even bother to go ask for it.

    Indeed they are.

If you're uncomfortable that's not the unions fault is it?

This is law, legislated by elected officials.
It's not a institution or corporate policy.
We are a closed shop state.
Wanna work here you must join.

We elect a negotiating team to get us the best deal we can. After all is said and done and the final is on the table you have the right to vote no.
If enough do it's back to the table or if what was presented is a final it's off to the picket line.
    It's a democracy.

It is the nature of the beast and that is exactly what it is..management vs labor.
We are a big company run by executive officers, a board of directors and ultimately shareholders.
All the salaries are public. We want and they don't want to give. They do not collaborate, they tell you what they are willing to do.
20 executives take a week off and the company chugs on. 20 drivers are off and we'd be in rough shape. It's only adversarial around the bargaining table.
Otherwise we all work together to reach the same goal and everybody wins.

Tube trailers are used for high pressure gasses like helium, natural gas and hydrogen. Typically 1800 to 7000 psi. Although DOT limits psi of highway units.
Our products are chilled to liquid form and cannot exceed 23.5 psi

So how much influence do you have by yourself if you are negotiating with a company the size of fedex or xpo? All you can do by yourself is choose to accept it or not.

I've been driving for 30 years, the last 11 as a teamster. I made low 60's as a non-union local driver, when I joined a union shop I made 30k more and continue to do so, I hope the pension is there for me when I retire, if not I've also made other investments, I'm relying solely on it. If someone chooses to work locally for less money and substandard benefits because they object to being in a Union that is certainly their right to do so, plenty of non-union work out there.

The funny thing is non union workers get better pay because of the union workers. The pay raises bc truckers talk pay and find out what the union pays better (usually- I make less but my bennies make up for it but the pension is in limbo). The only real pro that really makes me stay is knowing I can keep my job. We have a guy that got fired 5 times and got his job back! He's a pos but that's a whole other story. I just hate that "right to work" law and employeers firing you just bc they don't like you.

I will say that I wasn't a strong union person but stayed in for 32 years because it was a good job. But I became a stronger member eight years ago when my wife got sick with cancer and found out how good our health insurance and benefits are it changed my whole attitude and also ask me in 680 hours how I feel when I am retired with a real good retirement at 61 years old. Just my two cents from coming from a non union family and than ending up where I am today. I use to drive over the road for low pay and didn't think there was any better but I found out.

It depends on your qualifications and credentials, and your skill as a negotiator. And of course, your greatest power is the ability to walk away.

It is, unless the union has repeatedly told its members not to pressure non-members into joining.

Thank you for underscoring my point. The right to not join a union is not respected at the level of the state legislature.

It's forced collectivism, at the expense of the individual.

No it's not the nature of the beast, that is the paradigm that unions have adopted and instilled into their members in order to preserve the union. If they don't cause workers to feel like they're going to get screwed by management then that would take away a powerful motivation for continued union membership.

Cool, thanks. I figured maybe it was to limit the amount of product that could be lost in the event of a spill or release.

And that's a really good reason for them to go work elsewhere.
