How did mobile mechanic slide defective 5th wheel?

    One time I was at a truckstop, and I needed to slide my 5th wheel to either take weight off the steers or off the drives. I know how to slide the 5th wheel in a truck if the 5th wheel is not defective, but my fifth wheel was defective and would not slide. My company hired a mobile mechanic to come out and repair the 5th wheel. The mechanic stood by the 5th wheel and had me unlock the 5th wheel and lock the tandems and move the truck backward or forward to slide the 5th wheel. Lo and behold, the 5th wheel slid. I suppose that probably the cause of my 5th wheel not sliding before was that the pins on the fifth wheel were stuck out. I suppose that the mobile mechanic probably got the pins in somehow to make it so that the 5th wheel slid.

    But how would the mobile mechanic have got the pins on the 5th wheel in? What tool would he have used? Is there some sort of "trick" to it that I am not aware of?

    Spray some WD 40 in the pins area and a little hammering perhaps.

    I have had mine stick where dropping the landing gear has helped unlock the plate. Don't pull against the landing gear though. Take off some pressure and gently rock. Good luck. That has worked for me.

    Drop the legs of trl dump bags and take weight off and slide lubricant and a hammer. Keep it exercised and lubricated and you won’t have problems

    Get the truck and trailer lined up and roll down landing gear, And if that didn't work he got a bigger Hammer to beat the pins in?

    Ive always used a hammer, a crowbar and some 5th wheel lube. Never had a problem. Just release the 5th wheel lock, stick crowbar against the pin and tap the pry section a few times and it almost always pops in. Then use a huge coating of 5th wheel grease in it. About once every 3 weeks even if you rarely use it. release it hit it with brake cleaner and relube it. It will never stick. I recomend lucas 5th wheel grease. Works the best lasts the longest and has a nozzle.

    When Mine was stuck, I just dropped the trailer so I could see what was going on.

    Had one locator that need a small tap to break loose after being sprayed with rust penetrant.

    Then sprayed down the tracks and slid it with the 4 foot pry bar I use to pull up nailed down dunage boards.

    Much easier than trying to only slide one notch while hooked to the trailer.

    Working smarter is a valuable learned habit.
