They use straps to keep from damaging the trailers if they are inadvertently run over, instead of pulling the side rail off. That was why the company a work for started using straps, instead of chains. Been in IN myself, as well as southwest Michigan, picking up chickens from that outfit, and also delivering some of ours there.
More than 6,000 chickens freed when strap snaps on trailer

The chickens didn’t want to be shish-ka-bobbed or turned into McNuggets.

It could be worse. The plant I use to work for hauled the rendering in dump trailers(rendering is everything that's left after the saleable parts are processed...guts, feathers, heads etc.). Our plant's rendering processor was down, so they were hauling trailer loads of almost liquid guts in dump trailers which had a slosh baffle in the middle up into GA someplace. Except, one of the trailers slosh baffle wouldn't latch in place, so every time the driver hit the gas, liquid chicken guts would shoot out from under the rear of tarp, then when he'd stop, it would come out from under the front. They had to close the road and call out the fire department to hose all that down...needless to say, the fine and clean up costs were rather steep.
