Decent LTL companies are a retirement job. If you are planning on sticking with them here's what I suggest. Plan on paying for a hotel a few nights a week. Get the job and if you like it after a few months then you can move closer.

Reminds me of a time I blew my dispatcher's mind out of the water. Wife went up north (which is a location in MI) to go camping. I took the camper up there on the weekend and as I was driving into work Monday morning I got a call from the dispatcher.
D: "Hey, can you come in a couple hours early and do a delivery before your run?"
Me: "Nope, I'm passing West Branch right now on my way to the yard."
D: "Wait, you are driving from West Branch to come to work? Isn't that a bit of a drive to get here?"
Me: "Well no, I'm actually driving from Lupton to get there, and what's the big deal? I drive for a living. 2 hours on a Monday morning is simply warmup."

He just couldn't imagine I would drive from the campground 2 hours away to work.

If they're stupid enough to live there, that's on them.

Definitely following this. The wife and I spend a lot of time between Stuart, VA and Telico Plains, TN. (I often tell people I drive 18 so I can afford to ride on 2). We’re contemplating getting a chunk of dirt over that way somewhere. To answer the op’, I drive 37.5 miles each way 5 days weekly. It takes 45 minutes at 0300, about an hour at 1500. There’s 2 trucking companies up my way. 1 is otr, and from what I hear, the guys that drive for the local one call $45k a good year. So, yeah. It’s worth it.

Thanks for all the responses I should be able to find a decent company within 45 minutes I'll suck it up and deal with it.

Now to fill out some more applications and see what's out there. Epes called and pretty much told me the job is mine if I want it. Lowes account drop and hook, Tuesday through Saturday evening shift .47 cpm. It was a recruiter so I'm not quite sold yet.

Never done food service but if application website wasn't broken I'd put in with us food. I occasionally have had to unload trailers full of furniture for my current company. But I know food service is a while nother beast.

I live an hour from my terminal.

Running extraboard where they continually turn you on your 10 hours every day was brutal. I was lucky to get 6 hrs of sleep with the hour drive in, 30-45 minutes to shower, get ready, make your lunch, get out the door and the 30 minutes to do whatever and go to bed.

Once I got a bid, it's not that bad. I get plenty of sleep and the hour drive to and from is actually relaxing. My e-log has been showing off duty for 13-14 hours by the time I come back in the next day.

Where I get into trouble is when it snows in Denver and between there and my house, so I'll typically plan to stay at a friend's place in Denver on the couch for a night or two rather than spend 3-4 hours trying to drive home. Or I'll get a hotel.

So if you can find a company with a shallow driver pool where you'll only be on the extraboard for 4-6 months and tough it out, I think you'll be fine once you get a bid and a set schedule.

I can close the garage door and be punched in 15-20 minutes later most days.
