As a POC driver, I went inside the Sapp Bros in Salt Lake City to purchase a shower at 4:30AM on June 16th 2021. I was told that there were no showers available as there was nobody there to “maintain” them. I wasn’t offered anything else, so I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. When walking out of the bathroom, I witnessed a Caucasian gentlemen walking from the showers with key in hand. The cashier the playfully asked him if he has “saved any hot water for the rest of us”. After the gentlemen left, I approached the cashier as to why he got a shower and she curtly said he bought the last one.

I believe I was a victim of racism here. Please heed this as I don’t want another POC to experience this.

Do you think the white guy came in and purchased a shower and showered up in the time it took you to brush your teeth?
I'm white and I too have gone into a truck stop at 4 am and was unable to purchase a shower because there was no one there to clean them.

I believe that gentlemen was already in the shower while I was trying to purchase one. Also, the fact that the cashier asked if saved enough water for the rest of us indicates he did indeed use the shower. Plus he had a large shower bag.

I don't have anything to go on other than your story, but it seems to me he got the last shower.

4:30am is close to shift change. I'd expect night crew didn't feel like cleaning anymore showers, so you got the shaft. More a victim of laziness than racism.

I thought so too. Until I went back to the store to buy coffee before heading out about 15 mins later They (same lady cashier) were definitely selling showers to other drivers. I just bought the coffee and left. I don’t see how they cleaned up 12 showers in a space of 15 mins.

I would've asked again, or maybe ask for the manager. I doubt it was a race thing.

I would have felt stupid to ask again. But the main hing is that I shouldn’t have to ask twice. The only step was to notify corporate of my experiences and hopefully a change in customer service would include service for POC’s.

Very likely the other guy bought the shower before the cut off time. Big deal.
If you went in at 4:32 and the cutoff was 4:30, well too bad.
