Not sure which lumpers you're dealing with, but over 95% of the lumpers I've cut a check to have been spectacularly slow - either in making me sit around for hours waiting for a dock, or in sitting for hours docked, or both.

the lumpers we dealt with, worked a warehouse for various store merchandise, including cigarettes. they worked pretty darned fast.

i'd say on average, we showed up at about 7AM, and emptied by about 10 to 11 AM.

they would take out the cigs, put them onto pallets, the forklift guys (the actual warehouse workers) would take them away and store them.

cost back then was $150 per trailer load.

well worth it, cuz a case of cigs, can weight as much as 2 concrete cinder blocks.

JB Hunt, Schneider, Covenant, US Express, and other mega carriers would unload there as well.

waiting in line for your appointment time was normal. we always had first priority with the cigs loads.

I don't deal with many Lumpers anymore but in my meat hauling days the carrier billed the unloading back to the packer and the packer built it into the sale of the meat .
More and more of the unloading and gate fees are being pre paid .
The carrier im leased to simply won't take loads to problematic receivers .
Ran a load of grapes from nogalas az to the Chicago market a couple weeks ago for 6k ...no gate fee and no unloading in and out in less than 2 hrs .
In today's freight market there's no reason to take loads to hard to deal with receivers .

Nice. That's right in line with the article's prediction, that lumpers will simply get outcompeted like what happened with pallet exchange.

The small company im leased to has been in business for 89 years and we don't deal with low grades more than maybe once .

Lumpers are used so the warehouses can save on work comp insurance and less union employees. Most lumper services now are big companies that pay w2 and benefits. So not sure AB5 will hurt them. Maybe a minority that still work for cash etc

Not sure that it matters. If the warehouse pays the lumper company on a 1099 then maybe the lumper company still has to pass the ABC test regardless of how they pay their workers.

The receivers enjoy the idea of not having to carry the workman's comp insurance for the unloading crew.
