I have a ford F350 and a 36 foot tri goose trailer. how do I get around a safety fitness cert? if i stay under 11,754kg? and why do i see so many small one tons with a Tare of 4500? can someone help me out on this? and give me a rough estimate of the weight ill be able too tow trying to stay under that part of legislation. ........... oh and one other thing can i still run log books or does that have to be digital as well.

Right from the Alberta Transport website:

Carriers that register commercial vehicles must obtain an SFC for:

    • a truck or trailer, or any combination of the 2, with a registered weight of 11,794 kg or more, operating solely within Alberta
    • a truck or trailer, or any combination of the 2, with a registered weight of more than 4,500 kg that is used (or intended to be used) to transport goods on a highway outside of Alberta, including farm-plated vehicle(s)
    • a commercial vehicle originally designed for carrying 11 or more persons, including the driver, that is used (or intended to be used) for the transportation of passengers
If your not at the 11,794 kg you don't need a safety fitness certificate, therefore you don't need to yearly inspections either. You don't need to do log books or ELD. If you are travelling across provincial lines that number drops to 4,500 kg.

You will however not be able to haul hardly anything, as you weight of you truck and trailer is probably at 7-9,000 kg empty. So you could throw maybe a car on and that is all you could haul.
