I've been in retail for 18 years. I'm 34 right now.

I am in management and I make 120k a year gross with no expenses.

I am single and I dont want children.

I am sick of my job and industry. Retail is no longer about selling product. It's about kissing the ### of employees and customers. I hate my work regardless of the amazing benefits and great pay.

I work 50 hours a week, sometimes more but I need to be available 24/7 for emergencies.

I have no experience in trucking but it has intrigued me since I was a child.

I do have money put away.

Would it be stupid to quit my job, get an AZ, drive for a year and learn the trade, lease a truck, get my own authority and be my own boss (drive)?

I'm quite good at running a business and managing expenses. I budget millions of dollars a year right now.

Would I be a fool to do this? Is there good money to be made?

Yes you would be dumb to do it, but theres money to be made and if youve got real savings that can translate to buying exactly what you want so you can haul exactly what you want to haul when you get to that part.

    Talking you out of it...

3 am snowing pulling a topheavy load getting blown all over the place blowing a trailer tire. Thats exciting.

12 Hours at a place waiting to get unloaded with no bathroom and the nearest truckstop worth stopping at 2 hrs away

120 degree heat chaining and tarping a load in full long sleeves pants boots hard hat etc etc

The list goes on but they were all interesting at least

One thing you'll find about this site is it's full of naysayers so don't make a decision just based on what they say.

Obviously you're intelligent enough to be in the position that you're in now so just continue to research, do the math and make a decision on that and not your feelings.

Yes, you can make money in this business or you can lose everything, no different than in any other venture.

    Thanks for the great answer!

I've noticed that, lurking in the shadows. I don't really pay attention to it, every job has people saying it's terrible, you just have to weed through the negativity and get to the facts and knowledge that some have to say.

My job isn't a bad job. It's actually a great job. Extremely stable with amazing benefits. But I just dislike the direction that retail is going. I do not want to be anyone's punching bag, and that's what it has become.

It's a shame, I've worked long and hard to get where I am, only to be unhappy, despite an ever growing savings account.

Anyway, how likely is it for an O/O to gross 200k? I'd like to maintain my current lifestyle as much as possible once I am settled in a new career and I figured that with taxes and operating expenses, I would need at least that.

Edit: Obviously this is down the road and not to get started

Ignore gross, assuming you start up and go into it knowing you're investing in your future, past startup costs for the first few years assume you will net 60k to then pay taxes on, which will be between 4 and 8k depending on your accountant.

This should include all your usual operating costs coming out of gross and be a pretty safe number. Again it requires you do your homework on what truck and trailer you decide on and includes those payments (if you have them) but not the initial startup costs.

If youre as good as you say you are at buisness and management you should do a bit better and the first year shouldnt be such a steep learning curve for you but will of course include your startup costs
