Talk me out of becoming an O/O

Anybody I know that is in trucking, is looking for a way out.

 

Yes you would be dumb to do it, but theres money to be made and if youve got real savings that can translate to buying exactly what you want so you can haul exactly what you want to haul when you get to that part.



Talking you out of it...

3 am snowing pulling a topheavy load getting blown all over the place blowing a trailer tire. Thats exciting.

12 Hours at a place waiting to get unloaded with no bathroom and the nearest truckstop worth stopping at 2 hrs away

120 degree heat chaining and tarping a load in full long sleeves pants boots hard hat etc etc

The list goes on but they were all interesting at least

 

Trucking is the cats butt.....
Until the well goes dry.

 

stay out, get a higher paying more respectable job at Tim Hortons.

Just go try being a company driver first, see if you like it

 

One thing you'll find about this site is it's full of naysayers so don't make a decision just based on what they say.

Obviously you're intelligent enough to be in the position that you're in now so just continue to research, do the math and make a decision on that and not your feelings.

Yes, you can make money in this business or you can lose everything, no different than in any other venture.

 

Ignore gross, assuming you start up and go into it knowing you're investing in your future, past startup costs for the first few years assume you will net 60k to then pay taxes on, which will be between 4 and 8k depending on your accountant.

This should include all your usual operating costs coming out of gross and be a pretty safe number. Again it requires you do your homework on what truck and trailer you decide on and includes those payments (if you have them) but not the initial startup costs.

If youre as good as you say you are at buisness and management you should do a bit better and the first year shouldnt be such a steep learning curve for you but will of course include your startup costs
