Refer freight never really slowed down though the entire pandemic. I ran my rear off from the start of the pandemic until I left trucking at the end of December 2020. And as for not hauling over 38k. Your missing out on probably half of the reefer market. As a company driver maybe one in 10 of my refrigerated loads was under 38k and most of the light ones were hazmat. It was not uncommon to load up to 45k with 40 to 42k being a normal average every day load weight.
If your barely making it in a time of record rates you seriously need to rethink your business plan. Because the way you are running things now means that when the markets drop out, and they will some day. You're going to fail.

I had my best year ever in 2020 and on track to blow it away this year. Didn’t take or ask for any of the gooberments assistance. Did have a couple of slow months in April and May but the last part of 2020 was money.
I run flatbed and often grossing close to 80k. Contracted to be able to haul 48k. Don’t worry about the weight as long as it’s legal.Last edited: Apr 6, 2021

Typical. Ask a question then make up excuses when you don't get the answers you want. The freight market went nuts will this scamdemic crap. You seem to be blind to the fact that your customer took advantage of you.
YOU are the only one that is going to look out for your own best interests. If a customer lowered my rate "because reasons", I'd be looking for new customers and let some other schmuck haul that cheap freight.
Then you keep talking about "total shutdowns". So I'll assume you live in some commie state. Once again, you should've branched out. Im leased to a flatbed carrier and we were completely slammed with freight, still are. It actually lead to me buying my own truck. I took 7 extra days off during whole year in 2020, and that was only at xmas time.
As for not hauling over 40k lbs. Just another way for you to fail. I can count on 1 hand the times in the last year Ive been under 45k lbs on the deck and I thought that was a lot.lester Thanks this. -

I did get my rate awhile ago. Though everyone has their own business plan. I don't have backhaul loads that I used to have for my lane. That changed for good. My business plan is different. I have an agreement. I can't change lanes. I won't since I don't want to be catching a rabbit each time.

I found a hole in my backyard lawn. It was a rabbit hole with two little rabbit babies. At first they did not even have any fur. Just naked rats they looked like. The rabbit mother came every day at dusk to feed the little critters. I did not have a heart to get rid of them but I am always fond of those urban coyotes to sweep them out as a mother nature thing. Then these heavy rains came and I and my wife were worried about the babies but the rabbit's mother took them out and laid them on the grass before the hole filled with water, just like that. Mother nature is amazing. How did the animal knew to remove the defenseless babies from the hole. Then the following morning, yesterday, they were gone, she must have carried them out. Or maybe a hawk, an owl, there are plenty of those here, had a dinner.

Why would you worry about what the load weighs if you can scale it legally ?
and there’s gotta be a back haul or freight in every lane, you just gotta find it .
I never fooled with backhauls when I had unlimited outbound freight at nearly double the market rate . I just delivered it 500-600 miles away and ran back empty to grab another .Beaver9 Thanks this.
