what you need to look for , is a different truck .

sitting is worse than driving.
If that truck had been on the road and drive for the last five years , it would be in much better condition.

The truck you’re talking about is a parts truck , worth about $2,000 , considering it going to cost at least a $1000 tow bill to get it to a shop that can then charge you another grand to evaluate it and see what it’s gonna take to get it road worthy .

 

What are planning to do with it? Run local, pulling a rock box? Or a scrap steel hauler? If that type of job, offer the seller $3,000-$3,500. After an extensive inspection. Keep in mind, this truck is tired. Hope it has an 18sp transmission with that small motor.
If you get it, like others have said, drain and change all fluids, replace all belts, hoses, tires, rebuild the 5th wheel.
If it were me, I would keep yourself local with this truck.

I don’t care about paint or chrome etc but it has to be good start mechanically (I do want my truck looking better than it currently does but mechanically it has been awesome) A Truck that has been sitting for a long time may need everything, is it something that you will want to keep for a long time? Is it really worth it?

that being said only you know the answer to those. Parts aren’t cheap and if it is something you can afford to get running and will run it google up the cost of a lot of those parts and see if it is really worth it to you. Offer way less.

 

From just doing some basic research (even for someone/newby who isn't that experienced as a Trucker or Semi Truck owner) can use basic average factors towards how long the Diesel Engine last for. Some say over 1 Million miles whiles a few websites explain anywhere from 750k miles to 900k miles on average. For me, any truck that has over 150k miles on it (unless I know who & how that truck was driven) I wouldn't purchase that truck and been trucking for more than 26 years also a former o/o. Any motor that's sitting for a long period of time is a red flag. 1.5 Million miles on a motor that's never been overhauled isn't even worth the process of buying.

Like I said, if you get it, I would stay very local. I have worked for more than 1 company in my career, where the whole fleet was ‘tired’. But we stayed local, sometimes it was weeks we never left the county. Good luck, if I was a younger man, I would go for it. But you have to have a plan, be willing to turn wrenches.

 

1.4 mil, and never a rebuild, $8k is too much, half that would be my guess, personally If I was going to buy a truck, I’d invest some more into it, and find a better truck, another option is to look what a rebuild on that motor will cost you, cause it’s pretty much guaranteed to need one, and see where you are at
