There is good and bad with it, the good is that you are on the clock from the time you start until the time you are done unlike us milage drivers in the other states, the bad is that most the Cali drivers I have talked to say they still made more money when they were milage, what I do know is they have two different pay rates, they have one for when you are doing all your yard related stuff (pre/post trip, hooking, fueling, waiting ect), then you have your rolling rate which is actually when you are driving, I don't know exact figures but the rolling rate is higher than the yard rate, and I do believe it is straight time, no overtime.

One other thing I wanted to add is that I know for certain that if you are a Cali driver on a bid run that crosses state lines( example Fontana to Tucson and then Tucson back to Fontana after layover you are paid hourly for the whole trip, what I don't know is how Cali systems drivers are paid, in other words let's say you are dispatched from Fontana and they send you to Tucson, that would be all hourly, but after your layover they send you from Tucson to Odessa, since that run started in Arizona and ends up in Texas, you may be paid drop and hooks and milage pay instead, but don't quote me on that because I am not sure on that one.

I will say this the pay and benefits are good, and are on par with the other LTL companies (Old Dominion, Estes, Fed Ex Freight, XPO ect), they also run a what I call a more traditional linehaul system, you are hired to drive not work docks, another thing I will throw in is their transfer policy, if you transfer to another terminal regardless of city or region and stay in the same department, example you transfer from Fontana to Phoenix or wherever and stay in linehaul, your company seniority goes with you and places you above other drivers who started later with the company, I would probably say the biggest negative is the cameras if you don't like being baby sat, a plus is that we can talk on our phones again using bluetooth, they didn't allow any phone use while driving up until recently.

I do know at FXF, Cali drivers stay on hourly regardless. (We even have an extra time clock for the layover guys at our barn to compensate for DST.)

I spoke with a Saia driver in California yesterday. He confirmed that it is all hourly, even if running out of state. And it is OT after 40.

Is it the same standard hourly rate that city drivers get? Or is it higher for linehaul?

IIRC, city p&d started at $28, and linehaul ranged from $32 to $38

So are they being paid the same rate the whole shift now then, regardless if it's in the yard or driving the truck?

    cambo357 Thanks this.

Not sure. The driver I spoke with didn't mention any differential.

I just did my application with them. Hopefully I will hear back from a recruiter soon and I can get some more info.
