Very scary to think of something happening to another condo complex. Kudos to the cruise lines for helping.

The small city of Surfside, FL will be bankrupt soon with all the lawsuits against the city for not properly inspecting the buildings and not following up on requests to do inspections.

I thought I saw an article where the families of the deceased are already filling lawsuits. With what was reported so far, I think there is going to be a whole lot of finger pointing to the builders even if they do find they undercut the materials that were supposed to be used in support beams and other areas. Such a shame stuff like this still goes on.

I did read one article about inspections in AL being done every 20yrs on buildings like that, 40yrs sounds like a very long time to wait.

i still wonder if a sink hole was also a mitigating cause of this, and everything else just failed due to the stresses on the support beams/pylons sinking

it'll be a very long time before we know all the details.

On a documentary about FL underground, there are areas that have all kinds of underground rivers and caverns going beneath them. People draining off swampy areas affect this and can cause sinkage of land. Droughts also cause the water levels to drop. I guess they don't make mention of this very often so it doesn't scare people away thinking they are going to get swallowed up. It will be speculation for years as to what happened on this collapse, but it sounds like there were many problems going on with cracks and standing water on the concrete slabs. It is making people question their buildings as to safety, I would be scared to go to sleep in some of them.

It has been reported that only about half the number of pieces of rebar were seen in some of the pillar supports, thus leaving it less stable. It may not be all the cause, but I imagine they'll be looking at it real close. With them taking the building down though, it might be harder to prove or find in other areas of the building.
