Which truck can I drive legally?

    If a driver has a class C license in Illinois, what truck is he/she allowed to drive?

    26,000 Lbs and less
    Non Hazmat
    Under 16 passengers

    Those are couple things that I could research but it really is a nightmare trying to put all the pieces together.

    What if Truck GVWR is 19,500 Lbs but the truck has air brakes? Could someone with a class C drive Airbrakes?

    Does the length of the truck matter when talking about a Class C license? For example a 26" ft or 24" ft or 28" ft truck?

    Any help is appreciated! Thanks

    There is always a debate when this is asked. The best answer is to contact your states DOT office to get any local regulations. My take is a CDL is not needed. My reasoning is that air brakes are a restriction on a CDL and not an endorsement. As such, if you don't need a CDL then there is nothing to restrict.

    Depends on the state. For example, Michigan has a length maximum of 75 feet. By the time it matters you are heavy enough to need a CDL anyway.

    A class C CDL has to be issued with either a P or H endorsement. Yep It is the ENDORSEMENT requirement that determines the Class C CDL requirement. If not for that a C is not needed for 26000 or less. You will need an unrestricted C to operate an air brake equipped class C vehicle.
