I have minimal experience with tall pipe loads, but after reading all the posts, I have a couple thoughts on this...

    1. I don’t see any unused winches, which tells me the driver maybe didn’t have enough straps/winches to do proper belly straps. Could be that he was just “doing the best he could with what he had.” That doesn’t make it ok, just saying.

    2. Could be that the driver wasn’t allowed to be out of the truck during loading to throw belly straps. With the “pandemic” and all the nonsensical rules going on everywhere, that wouldn’t surprise me one bit. Of course everyone should have a reachin’ pole for this situation but not everyone does.

    3. Also, looks like most of the straps have no twist in them. That screams rookie to me. I know some guys don’t like twisting their straps but I always do it and it seems like most of the guys who are more experienced than me do the same.

All legalities/regulations aside, common sense tells me it should still have belly straps (or better yet, belly wraps?) and this driver was likely unprepared and/or under equipped for this load. I think it was a worthy hall of shame post.

I've been twisting straps since day one of flatbedding. I also have always carried a bunch of 2" ratchets, just for loads that I didn't have enough winches for.

Its called getting informed and prepared for the job. Just basic common sense.

I've also had to tell a couple shippers I couldn't take their load, because I didn't have the equipment to secure it and couldn't acquire it in a timely manner. I'd rather give the load back than risk a big ticket, or a load shift, or the freight fall off and hurt someone.

I’ve looked many times in the regulations. Outside of the dressed lumber regulations, I’ve never seen anything like that. I would be happy if someone proved me wrong, that way I can stop spreading incorrect information. I am stubborn and from the Sho-me-state after all!

it is in the dressed lumber and similar building materials section/
Idk the defining measure of whats similar as far as building materials.

Seems like if you got units stacked 3 high, be a better idea to secure layers underneath the top layer vs strictly over the top.

i can give a real good example of how layered securement would be of benefit vs over the top; but its longer than im about to type out at the moment, what with my coffee being down the hall and my day needing to get started.
I will touch back later on.
