So quick background. car blew up, couchsurfing, lot of debt no jobs worth a piss around where I am. Running out of cash. Ect,ect. Crappy year befor covid, then this pandemic bs. Yea I know trucking isn't peaches and cream but I could make myself last a year even if I hated it.
1 has anyone done this without a car. I know they'll bus me there. Shuttle to and from hotel. Am I missing something?
2 once you get your foot in the door, dont lie about anything is it common to get the boot short of just flunking flat out, Run deep background( havnt applied yet but email with recruiter about history said "think we'd still be g2g w/ your app" could be smoke) something I'm missing? Best thing I've read "treat every day like a job interview".
3 do they send you home after passing your cdl? They make you do like 10k miles then cdl test. I'd be doing it in my home state . Getting back to my friends would suck.
If this place dont actually let me in the door I've got a few other left lol I'm not at the bottom of the barrel yet. So there is hope. This just seems the easiest to pull off without weels little money.
Dm's would love me long as I can get average starting money I'd basically be a hobo with a job no home time( get hotel room for home every so often) no family, got to stock pile some money, make some choices, pay some debt. Not a spring chicken anymore. pushing 50 in a few more.
Mega schools ?

@Chinatown can help. He will want to know where you will be working from.
1. Yes. Most cdl schools run shuttles.
2. If your background and driving record are good, then you are in.
3. If you go through a cdl program where a trucking company pays your tuition, then yes, you will be expected to be in a truck with a trainer for a month upon completion of obtaining your cdl.
Paying for a cdl school yourself allows you the option of applying for companies that will hire recent cdl graduates.
Frozen Food Express will pay you to train. I expect that they will bus you to their training facilities, as most companies do.
Trucking is what you put into it. Make a maximum effort to succeed and you will.
Since you have bothered to join this forum, read up on which training companies you will want to avoid.
Choosing to train with CRST, CR England, or Prime, inc. will likely cause you much grief.
Lastly, learn what NOT to do while trucking by watching videos of truckers doing it wrong. -
if you doing otr, you really don't need a car.
can use a cab/ uber to get where you want on hometime/ day off.
I tell people that I am a working homeless worker lol.
kept my personal stuff in storage and no apt.
lived in my truck till last year.
you be surprise how much mo at you can bank. specially if you really had no bills like me..
good luckFlat Earth Trucker Thanks this. -
Which company did you choose?
Are you ok with hair follicle drug test?
Some companies do urine test.
You can do real well in trucking; good choice!Last edited: Jul 13, 2021

Yes, it can be done. Every company school is a little different though so make sure you know how the company YOU choose does it before you sign. When I signed on it was like joining the army - you get pre-approved by a recruiter and they get you a greyhound ticket for their school. Hotel rooms, rental cars and meals were taken care of until I got on my trainer's truck. Pack light because you'll be schlepping that bag around for weeks! You can move in when you get assigned your own truck.
If you can pass a UA, don't lie about things on your application, listen, follow instructions and not be a problem child you don't have to worry about being sent home. If there is something in your background with the courts, the DMV, an insurance company - they WILL find it. Don't assume that because your recruiter didn't find it on the simple pre-approval background check that the company won't find it in the multi-day deep dive background check at orientation.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this. -
Hey thx guys. I almost put some of these answers in my post but seemed to much.
I live dead center of. Missouri.
So record goes like a lot of ppl. 3 yr have 1 1/2 yr old no financial responsability and wrong plates tickets and a 2yr 8 months old trucker killer 16mph thicket. Right at 5yrs ago a 1mph ticket and parafinalla mistemeter. 15 yrs piddly crap nothing really. 20 yrs or longer had 2 DWI's non felony 2 drug related felonys(can pass hazmat screen).
Ua not worried at all use to smoke a lot. Havnt but 1 time in a year couple hits 3months ago so yea still worried a little about a hair test even if I get my ears lowered
And befor I hear bla bla I'm laying it all out to strangers there's no way I'm losing a job I get in the door for cause I didnt say something on history they ask for. And absolutely no ####### way im going to prison cause some ####### smashes into me and dies and I piss dirty. Been to a state 120 day vacation once. Never again
Prime. hum ouch thought they were a little better regarded. That is who i had email contact with. I havnt done anything official no apps yet no calls anywhere, benn seriously researching reading everything I can cause of my past. Even been cpl training cause havnt had anything better to do sometimes to help get some insite. And dont know much. Drove good sized non cmv dump truck (like 350 GMC dump bed or something like that. pulled some decent trailers at last job landscaping but that is nothing like this.
Wish I could pay for school get a manual indorcement but dont have the money. What you guys call floating it seems is what we called speed shifting a 4 wheeler when younger. Right rpm right speed 3-4 no clutch dont get it right hear the bear lol. Although seems clutch is useless pretty much in cmv unless starting out trans doesn't have sinks (real name eludes me)like a 4wheeler. Get me if I'm way off, dont mind learning this is just my impression reading
Let me have it guys. You guys r great from my constant reading searching these forums for the last week.
Thank you for the replies and insiteLast edited: Jul 14, 2021

Apply with companies that only do urine test. Those hair test results go back further than people think and some prospective drivers have found that out the hard way.
Trucking companies will find out about your entire life history if they want and some do. Best advice I can give is to read the questions on the applications carefully and don't add information that isn't asked for. They usually only want last 3 years of job history, but can also ask for more.
Have you had a DUI within the last 5 years? That asked for 5 years, not 20 years.
Stevens Transport and Millis Transfer do urine test.
Apply online to those 2 companies and if that doesn't work, use the WIOA Program in Missouri for free cdl school.

Don't talk too much though..Many drivers get carried away and talk themselves right out of a job by rattling on about things that were not even asked about.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this.
