This question comes from me as a vandweller. I currently am registered and working in Utah and living in a van (using family member's address) but am looking to move somewhere warm this coming winter and work as a truck driver.

I read I have to transfer my CDL within 30 days of moving. But living in a van and not having an address makes that difficult to get a new license in the state. I've read how in South Dakota for example you can spend 1 night at a motel or RV park there and become a legal resident and get a drivers license. But I think it isn't as easy for CDL holders. Also South Dakota isn't warm so that specific state wouldn't work for me.

I will continue research but let me know if anyone has had this issue and figured something out.

Unless some company would let me drive in their state with UT CDL and med card then it wouldn't be a problem.

Hire on with a company that uses the address on your license, and doesn't matter where you park your van.
When I transferred my license to Nevada, just had to show my new address and take the eye test at the DMV.
Texas is a little more strict, but Florida is about the same as Nevada.
Warm weather and no state income taxes = Florida, Texas, Nevada.

What type driving job are you wanting?
Most OTR companies don't care which state you live in. The company might be headquartered in Utah, but hires drivers from 48 states. Don't have to change your cdl as long as you live in the hiring area.

Some drivers on this forum joined Escapees RV Club.
This club can get a legal address for you which you can use to change your license also.
Last time I checked they made it easy to get an address in Florida, Texas, South Dakota, Nevada. This way when you file income taxes, you won't have to pay state income taxes.
    Headquarters is in Texas.
This might be the most simple and quickest way to get it done. One driver used his pickup truck with a camper top as his vehicle when he joined.

Company’s don’t give a rats rear end where you live. For many years, I lived in Wisconsin, commuted everyday into Illinois to the yard, for a company that was based in Ohio. Company filed all paperwork, concerning taxes etc., with Wisconsin.

You can become a resident of South Dakota by going to the DMV with three pieces of mail with your name and your South Dakota post office box address on them. South Dakota doesn’t have a state income tax either.

You can’t keep a hazmat designation doing this but it will work otherwise. I’ve actually done this myself. I took a week of vacation in Deadwood, SD, rented a P.O. Box and then arranged to have mail sent to the new box, switching my resident state to S.D. at the end of the week.

One thing: You won’t be able to vote. You need an actual physical residence for that.

Yeah Nevada is the closest to Utah so I've been thinking about going there. No income tax is another plus.
From what I've read I can stay at an RV park for 30 days and then register that as my address. I'll have to do some more research.
I assumed a company would want me to have a CDL for the state they're based in/I'm working in. Maybe they won't care. Probly depends.

For unprofessional drivers transferring license is easy but I assumed it might be more difficult for a CDL holder. You didn't have to take a driving test to transfer your CDL?
The hard part is getting an address to put on my license since I live on wheels.

Thanks for the info on Escapees, I'll have to call and see if they help people in states other than Texas.

I also do delivery work and have never gone out of state in a semi. I've considered doing OTR but I like the exercise and I'd rather unload myself then wait on warehouse workers lol. I do have wanderlust but it seems like OTR would ruin the travel experience. At least for me I have a different mentality when I'm working and when I'm off and don't think I would enjoy it. Most guys I've talked to who did OTR tell me there's not much time to stop and enjoy a place anyway, unless you're on your 34 I guess. Or you might be taking your 34 in Timbuktu.

Clark County Nevada is nice year round.
    Plenty of RV parks.
Contact Escapees first and find out if they can help in Nevada.

Plenty of jobs here, Las Vegas, Henderson for local, regional, OTR.
There's one that's seems ok that has a mix of local and some steady runs to Utah:
    Ponderosa Dairies
    Amargosa Valley, NV
    88 miles outside Las Vegas.

Depends on the hiring area the company uses.
For example, Pride Transport is out of Salt Lake City, but drivers in Las Vegas area can work for the company also because Nevada is in the hiring area.

Plenty of good paying jobs here such as the Line Haul companies where you are out and back the same day.
    Oak Harbor Freight Lines
    Old Dominion Freight Line
    ABF
    YRC/Yellow
    Reddaway
