How much waiting time is too much?

1 minute that I'm not getting paid. I'll probably never go back OTR simply because of all the unpaid work involved.

 

Anything over 2hrs, 3 at the very max. All places dry/reef/flat for that matter. Any place that takes longer than 3 hours and i probably won't come back unless it's a crazy stupid rate.

Picking and choosing where we go I'd say my avg dock time is about 1hr give or take. I did take a grocery load to wakefern a few weeks ago and was out within 2 hours. That one surprised me Lol

 

That’s something you’re going to have to decide.

 

When I did reefer with Knight, out of PHX, we had to give WalMart DC's 4 hours of unload time before we could get detention, every other place that I can think of was 2 hours and then the detention would begin. Lots of places I've been to take over 6 hours, so as soon as I get parked, I take a nap. Reefer is a lot of work and I didn't get paid any more for doing it. I love it, when you unload in one place and they have you on a pickup ASAP, that's when you really have to hustle and get that trailer cleaned out with your 4 gallons of water and leaf blower!

On a side note, every WM DC I've ever been to has WiFi, so you can save your phone data and catch a documentary or movie on #####ute or YT, or use a VPN for something more stimulating!

 

Welcome to the "World of Refrigerated freight". 2 hours was usually the standard before detention kicked in( amazing how fast things got at 1:55. Reason time varies so much with reefer, is the lack of storage for your product. Many times, YOU are their cold storage until loads move around. One reason I hated reefer, van freight they can put anywhere. Not all reefer outfits are like that. Certified and SuperValu were the worst. Some, like Jewel or Schultz in Sheboygan, were great. Better get used to it, I may be "crusty", but that part of trucking has never changed.

 

I agree with this, now that I’m getting paid for everything I do. It’s pretty nice being paid by the hour now, instead of by the mile, load or salary.

 

That’s exactly what happened to me the last time I delivered to Martin Brower in The City of Industry. I watched from the street for hours all the trucks behind me going in and coming out. I was their cold storage. The guard admitted they had no room for the product I had. I don’t recall exactly how long I was there, but it was more than 8 hours.

 

I once waited over 24 hours to get a load reworked, overweight on the drives, at a cold storage facility in Henderson, NV. I was loaded, scaled off site and unloaded 3 times until they got it right. I believe knight paid me a max of 10 hours detention pay of the privilege.

I was backed up to their dock, a shift change happened and they "forgot" about me, until after about 6 hours I had enough and starting calling up my DM.

There is nothing good about waiting that long, as it all boils down to someone being incompetent or not paying attention to detail.

 

And that someone is working by the hour.
