Hello Everyone! First time poster here with a few questions. I originally put this in another forum but being Canadian someone suggested I post here too.

Pilot here looking to switch careers. I have always had an interest larger equipment/fixing things. I spent a lot of time on the farm when I was younger just watching my grandfather work on his machines. When I ask my self what would appeal to my as a second career, I like to think a Truck Mechanic does the most (and all the hard work that comes a long with it).

The pandemic was a bit of an eye opener for me being in the aviation industry. It really made me realize how vulnerable my career as a pilot can be. On top of that, ever since I had kids I find sitting in hotels to be wasted time, time that I could be with the ones I love. Being away weeks on end can certainly take its toll (my priorities in life are changing).

So here I am just trying to do as much research as possible. I thought reaching out on a forum would help, and I thank you all in advance for the feedback!

I am in Ontario, Canada so this is more geared to those in the know for the 310T apprenticeship.

    1. What is the likelihood of someone with no experience or college certificate actually securing an apprenticeship (specifically Ontario, but Canada in general)? With kids at home I would like to find an apprenticeship first and get to work right away, and focus on schooling/theory second. But is this realistic? Are there employers out there that will take a chance on people with no schooling/experience these days?
    2. Is there a demand for Truck/Coach Mechanics in Canada?
    3. What does the average salary look like for a fully licensed mechanic?
    4. Do you enjoy/love your job? What is the most enjoyable part about going to work?
    5. For any of you second career guys/girls…what was it that made you make the jump into this career?

Any information is appreciated. Thank you in advance for any insight and advice!!

Type in 310T on Tiktok and click on the hashtag. You will see videos pop out of employers/mechanics who are crying for help and the shortage of those mechanics. My buddy also works at TTC and he says he easily clears 100k a year, the only negative he says is the amount of injury in the field. Good luck!

Ironically, I have moved into aviation in the last five-ish years. If you want to stay in aviation, but take a different track, the industry has a huge shortage of maintenance personnel. Of course there are pros and cons to everything, so...

I was standing in line at the Tim's last summer when a fellow saw my ballcap with my previous employer's logo on it, assumed I could be a mechanic and came over to chat. Wanted to know if I'd be interested in coming to work for the airport maintenance department. Said they can't get anyone off their rears since everyone's on the CERB. I've heard this same story from many companies. Nobody want's to work these days.

You need to contact a Big Rig Diesel Mechanic School I would say. Start there. You sound interested in Airline Mechanical repair, you can contact that School too, and I for one think you should GO FOR IT, or both. You are interested. Asking Truckers isn't going to get it. Contact a school near you. I hope that is not mean to say. Take care alright.

I am sure covid really devestated the airline workers. Everyday they don't resume there are people that worked at those companies that are Never, Ever, going to recover. I personally think... just me, that all the laid off people are the ones buying crypto currency, tesla, amazon, walmart stocks, and once their unemployment money is gone, and they cash in their 401(k) this country is going to plunge into darkness like never ever before. Have you tried to find a nice pair of shoes lately? Get your oil changed? Have a nice dinner? Pray for the USA folks. Pray HARD.
