Way to much angle on the cable and rigging. Cranes are designed to lift not pull. Needed to extend the boom so that it was a straight vertical lift.

Wonder when the last time it was inspected? This part of the world I think they get done annually.

There was a tower crane accident in Kelowna a couple of weeks ago while they were dismantling it; five dead. There are some videos posted to the Internet by a couple of the guys on the crane just before it happened. Perhaps people should just stick to doing the job at-hand.

Caution: NSFW language. There are also a number of other unsafe practices visible on the videos such as, no hardhat, no fall restraints, etc.

I do agree with you but there was a problem with that slewing ring. That crane should have shut down long before that slewing ring let go even in rigging mode. Like @AModelCat said I’m sure it hadn’t been properly inspected in a long time. A lot of old cranes get shipped to these countries and never get seen or heard from again until there is a catastrophic failure and then they show up on YouTube. I would think the rigging or the boom would have let go long before the slewing ring if it was properly maintained.
