I do it all myself. It's too easy to handle from anywhere for free to pay someone.

I used Ooida to get the authority, and used their insurance, for about 7 yrs. Same reason. They were very helpful. But I’ve done all the IFTA and IRP, and the other stuff since. Recently I used Ooida for the Clearinghouse. It was worth it. Met the deadline, and they’ll update it this year too. I forget the exact details. But once you’re issued an MC# there’s a protest period,( or used to be) of 2 or 3 weeks. I think Insurance has to be in place. Then Authority is granted. Timing it right will avoid paying for insurance too long while not Legally able to run yet. I forget the details, but something to find out about. As far as an MC# it can be done yourself, directly online for a nominal fee, then you have to file proof of insurance. to activate it, within a couple months maybe? Or it’s forfeited. I still use Ooida Drug Consortium, never had a problem. I think it’s worth it pay Ooida, not only to cover everything, but for the time they’ll spend answering questions. Very patient and helpful. There’s a lot of paperwork to file and keep for your Own records. Hiring yourself, including prior Driving Job history. I sent requests to former employer’s for instance. Pre screen Drug test. Copy of current D/L , annual copy of record from DMV. Annual violations updates. Easy to miss something. I guess New Carrier audits are much simpler now. Handled remotely. When I had mine, it was a fairly new thing. They came to the House. I had everything covered. Later after an accident, they did a Safety Audit. Same thing, passed 100%. I keep a list of deadlines for everything. Once everything’s set up, just a matter of renewals and updates. Generic Employer applications, Job history request forms, Driver violation update forms, just about any forms needed are available from fmcsa for free. No need to buy them from JJ keller. I’m sure some things have changed, since getting mine. Ooida will come in handy, as they keep up on all the changes, and know what to expect when it comes to different timelines. Be sure not to pay too early for Insurance. They’ll know the best way to time it to save you money.

Yep I spoke to OOIDA this morning and they quoted me $930 for everything I would need! I also had a $700 quote from another company but that doesn't include everything. I suppose I can do my own IFTA and IRP. Not that hard for that. She said they would let me know when to call and purchase the insurance to keep me from buying it and paying for it when not in use. Process will take 4-5 weeks and insurance should be purchased during week 3

You're going to be buying it and not being able to use it for about a month anyway. Can't activate authority until the insurance company files with the Feds. Then there's the waiting period before it's live.

Give me a call if you need a little guidance. You really need to talk to an agent that can guide you to the right policy. If you still live in the same state you used to, you should be able to do better. There are a few tricks. My first year premium in FL w/o any physical damage was $14k for 1 mill auto/100k cargo and 2 mil general liability. Unlimited radius rated on flatbed hauling steel. Filing for authority is stupid easy yourself as well as enrolling in a consortium. IRP and IFTA varies on your state. If you are an OOIDA member they’ll file your BOC-3 for free.

Yes im an OOIDA member. Didn't you give me a number for insurance awhile back? I cant remember our conversation......Yes my wife who has dealt with insurance for 20 years with Allstate, Although they don't deal with the commercial policy I need they are gonna quote me a policy through a 3rd party. Im still gonna get a few more quotes.....I need an independent insurance agent is what I need that will give me quotes from multiple companies...

All you need for maintenance is a notebook to write down what you have done and when it is due next.
I looked into their logs once and it was cheaper to get them at a truckstop.

I made/designed my own and now I print them from my printer when I need them. For maintenance, I just write down in a notebook what was done and to what piece of equipment along with the date and mileage.
