Anyone had a steer tire blowout while driving?

If you have a trailer on, and have a trailer trolley valve, braking with that is an option, keep off the truck brakes though. But in an emergency situation, steer and coast are priority # 1, little bit of fuel to give you stability

 

Call it "Devine Intervention", but in all my years and miles, I never had a steer tire let go, and that goes back to bias-ply tube type. Not sure why, maybe because being a single, it doesn't pick up stuff like a dual might, just never happened. I DID pick up a bolt in a rail yard, but made it to a tire shop. Thing is, with all these videos and what "to do and not to do" are some help, it usually surprises the hell out of you, and you natural reaction is to hit the brakes, making things worse. Unless the wheel itself actually stops turning, it should still roll, and I think going over a barrier is a bit much. You should be able to control it some. Most people I talked to about it, said, all they felt was a tugging at the steering wheel, and was no problem coasting to a stop, time and space allowed, of course. Now, with no P/S, I heard it's a much different story,,

 

Right steer at 85 mph west Texas. Didn’t touch the brakes, but truck wanted to pull right. I pulled left and kept her straight, and got onto the shoulder and backed up an on-ramp. Got out and looked and realized that I had lost a wheel seal, and the hub caught fire.

Things happen, but any veteran with a brain should be able to maintain control.

 

I had an flat square piece of metal about an inch long wedged deep in my front right tire. I discovered it at a drop yard. It was still holding air, but unknown how long that would last.

Called roadside, and asked them to send out a truck with a new tire. The guy wanted me to drive 20 miles back to our yard in Fontana. I’m like, no sent a truck. Lol.

 

In 1978, long time ago, I bought a new Freightliner cabover, The truck was on it's maiden voyage when it blew a right front steer at 70 mph.
This tire just blew to smitheren"s. Ka-boom. Was meeting 2 Transport's at the time. I was fortunate the Rig was empty, took all the strength I had in my forearms to hold it from hitting the other trucks head-on. This was a bias ply tire. Still didn't have the steel belted tires we are now use to.
The rim cut into the asphalt and was tough to hold onto. I locked er down like you Guys mentioned and got by the incoming trucks, then let it coast till I was stopped. Have never forgotten that evening. Today, don't think I could hold it like when I was younger. Not as much strength left in my arms as back then.

however, one night, doing my post trip, i saw a small "bubble" on the sidewall.

the shop was like 1/2 mile away from my warehouse, and took it over there.

i got 2 new steers.

 

I've had 2. 1 in a decked up long logger in about 6" of mud. The front felt a little loose.
Other on 5 South of Panty hose jct. Bam and down went the right side of a COE. Coasted to the shoulder.

 

Once, running 55-60, left steer. Hit the shoulder, before damaging the rim. Was surprisingly really no big deal. Other time, had a sidewall leaking, left steer. 4 wheeler pointed it out. I stopped and was surprised to see it was almost flat. Hole in the sidewall. Didn’t pull to the left at all, that I noticed. It was much more dangerous before power steering. Some of the Interstates with low shoulders are more dangerous, if you fall off the edge. Cause of most single vehicle accidents, I’ve heard. I believe it.
