Things on a truck a cop would look at for a random inspection?

Whatever you do, do not do what this guy did! I refuse to get drawn into a debate if this guy was right or wrong! I will say this. I am privy to some of the background of this incident. The Georgia DPS was almost ready to call a wrecker to have the rig towed to a place and spend hours inspecting it.

I never would have done it, but I always thought he had a pretty good point.

So......what happened ultimately?

 

As I have studied this issue intensely,
years of observation and experience has taught me,
you have to roll in the weight station with:

A big chrome visor - bonus if it blocks your view.
A stick shift so tall you have to reach above your head for it.
A complete set of chrome lug nut covers - the pointier the better.

Missing lug covers are not known to get you a violation, but you will only get sloppy seconds from the truck stop lot lizard.

Anything less - you are suspect to trucking law enforcement.

 

I don’t really remember the minutia of the situation, I think the inspection was finished and he went about his business!

 

For the record, my position when interacting with law-enforcement, be polite be nice and get the situation finished as soon as possible! I have said this repeatedly, cops are not your friends, they are also not your enemy! They have a job to do and so do you! This is been debated in these forums before and I will repeat my position! Do not answer questions. Do not be a jerk, be polite just refused to answer the question, all you have to give them is your permits, your license, your medical card, and your HOS records. I do not know if there is any kind of law or regulation that states a driver must assist a DOT officer while inspecting! I do know this, you get into a pissing contest with a cop, and in almost every situation are you going to find that cop does it higher. Inside the world of trucking, regardless of how long you’ve done it, polite and nice will take you through a lot of bad situations I know this for a fact!

If the tires and brake shoes have more than 3/4 of their hight from when they were new and all lights and turn sig. brake lights work you will be ok in a quick ck. walk around of the truck that truck cops do as you pass thru scale house?

 

Keep your mouth shut. Lights, tires, brakes, exhaust leaks, they will also check the steering, how much slack ,when you turn the wheel..a little paint on the frame does wonders.

 

Been my experience ( pulling suspenders) a rusty, dirty truck has a much better chance of getting the full "bend over" treatment. Cops during an inspection told me, if they see a clean truck, it more than likely has a driver that cares and more compliant. I always kept my trucks clean, and rarely remember a full inspection. It should be noted, I went around every scale I could, but even still. And I learned a long time ago, when stopped, and almost impossible for some, but keep your big mouth shut.
