A few things I've since learned, from unconfirmed but legit sources, I 70 could be closed for up to 6 months, with the minimum being 3 months, and that's incredibly optimistic. These are some pics I friend shared on Facebook from someone he follows. In the area around Bair Ranch RA, as they are clearing the debris, they are finding parts of the jersey barrier, the road surface and road bed are gone, there are also supposedly 3 rocks above the area, each roughly the size of a nice house, that are ready to tumble at any moment, they need to be brought down before anything can happen. The rumor is that CDot has suspended all projects on US 285, US 50, US 550, Hwy 9, US 40 and Hwy 13. These pics are from 7/31.
Final thought, PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES AND STOP TRYING TO TAKE HWY 82 OVER INDEPENDENCE PASS, MAXIMUM LENGTH IS 35', APPARENTLY SWIFT AND AMAZON ARE THE WORST OFFENDERS OF THIS, CSP AND CDoT ARE NOT PLAYING GAMES. The county wants any trucker who ignores the signs and attempts to take Hwy 82 arrested.
These are the train tracks on the south side of the river, this is between Hanging Lake RA and Grizzley Creek RA
This is the entrance to the Hanging Lake hiking area
The rest of these are I-70 in general
This is near Bair Ranch RA, as you can see, the jersey barrier and part of the road surface are missing.
This is why I 70 is closed in Colorado

Big yikes. I know exactly where that happened. Took that road every other day for 5 years as a team driver in winter. There were constantly rocks falling there and i was wondering when it would finally let go.

The hike up to Hanging Lake from that rest area is, or was, awesome. I saw a pic or two of the lake yesterday taken from a drone I guess. It looks awful. Hopefully it will return to it's former glory sooner or later.
Oh, and that rest area isn't for trucks so no hike for us going through there.Gatordude Thanks this. -
Mother nature wins every time.

Even when they re-open it every time it rains a mudslide can happen. This is due to the wildfire that killed all the vegetation. Nothing to stop the water. Save yourself some time from a road closure and go I 80 even though it re opens. It’s closed 3 times before this closure last month due to mudslides it’s not gonna stop anytime soon.

I used to live close to there about 20 years ago. I can’t believe anyone in their right mind would take Independence Pass in a tractor trailer! That is tight enough in a F350, much less a semi.
Gatordude Thanks this. -
Even though it can be a slow ride up the 70, it is still some of the most beautiful country in these great United States.
Except winter of course. Speaking of the roads not the hillsides.Trucker61016, Radman and Northern Nomad Thank this. -
No doubt great scenery.mjd4277, Trucker61016, Northern Nomad and 1 other person Thank this. -
And now,a “friendly reminder” from the “we’re here to help you” folks at CDOT!
