Get your haz-mat tanker endorsment. Get 2-5 years OTR experince. Maybe do a year with non haz-mat tanker. Apply to a fuel hauling company that either takes new tanker drivers or only requires a year of tanker experince.
Some may let you with no tanker or hazmat experince but insurance will say yes or no. -

There was a time, not too long ago, fuel haulers( suicide jockies) were the cream of the crop, best drivers ever, they had to be. Fuel haulers generally were old men that had years of experience on 2 lane roads and never had an incident. Fast forward to today, I'm not sure what causes our gas stations to run dry, they claim it's a shortage of drivers, but I don't think so. In all my time, there was NEVER a shortage of fuel haulers, and I think the tank farms are just empty. ( don't cause panic, blame it on the drivers,,,yeah, that will do) We're using it ( 337 MILLION gallons A DAY!) probably faster than we can produce it.
Today, companies have no choice but to hire just about anyone that applies, and that can have dire consequences. Any taker requires special skills, but gas, by nature, needs the best of the best, and sorry, I just don't think new drivers have what it takes. Lose a load of FedEx boxes or axxwipe,, no biggie, but lose a load of gas,,,it's not something I wanted to do. I hauled 1 (one) load of gas in my life, and my hands were black from squeezing the steering wheel. Clearly it wasn't for me. Good luck.george stanley and Speed_Drums Thank this. -
