In other news, I'm hauling a 43,000 pound load from NorCal to Denver tomorrow morning. Not looking forward to climbing Donner summit with it. Once I get past Reno, it's pedal to the metal all the way.

Tom, if I could afford land in Colorado that's where I'd be too. At least I'm guessing that's where you were given the 11k comment. I spent a week out there about a month ago. We got cold several times. It was awesome seeing as how I'm sitting here now in a 100 degree pee lot in Texas.

There should be a lot of cheap land, it's just far from any grocery stores or civilization. A few years ago, we got 3 or 4 acres for $3000 or $4000, I can't remember which. In 2008, we paid $6000 for 7.6 acres. I prefer southern Colorado anyway. There's too much traffic along the I-70 and I-25 corridors, and it's too expensive to live. There are plenty of ski resorts, scenic views, and parks down that way without all the smog and people. But there's also not a whole lot of good paying jobs. Plus, if you really want to live in the mountains, it could get really expensive trying to find a well that produces water, so you might have to rely on rain collection or hauling it up there.

One thing I would not recommend is northeastern Colorado. It's basically Wyoming, Nebraska, and Kansas combined. So you get hot summers, cold blizzards, hail storms, year round high winds, tornado warnings, and cow farts without any of the scenic views or redeeming qualities. I plan on selling the house out there for like $40,000 to our renters.

I'd love to be somewhere near Montrose, personally, but not near town. All the places I love to play are in every direction.

I like Colorado, but I have no desire to live in heavy snow country. My in-laws lived in Truckee CA on the east side of Donner Summit for many years, and spending 4-5 months a year with snow covering the windows of the house, and digging a tunnel to get out of the front door and garage isn't my idea of fun as I get older. There are still out of the way places in Oregon and Washington where they ignore the politics of Portland and Seattle, and live life how they want. Plus the weather is a lot easier for me to handle being close to the coast.

Money might be better and overall path towards obtaining more exclusive freight but I finally realized that buying a reefer is not something that would work for me.
I had a series of deliveries of nicely paid loads at various grocery warehouses and I must say that the level of distress and how my personal patience was tested by large suppressed the feelings of achievement with the nice rates.
In short, delivering paper rolls, tires, empty beer cans, auto parts works better for me.
For now, I stick to the van freight.
The only direction of advancement and escaping from the inevitable dry van crowd would be an open deck platform. I'd keep the van too and use it seasonally.
I have been getting pretty good results with freight within a much shorter radius this week.
Pleasant Prairie WI - Loves Park. Il $950
Joliet IL - Cleveland OH $2100
Willard OH - Des Moines IA $2100
Urbandale IA - Bensenville IL $1010
    $6160/1600 miles.

By being in closer home proximity, it feels less stressful. I can afford a towing back home from 300-400 miles awsy in case of an engine failure. The factor I can't ignore at this mileage anymore.

I couldn't agree more. I always say that if I ever had a good experience at a grocery warehouse I might do it more. It hasn't happened...so I don't.

Joe, how many miles on your Volvo?

I am at 1 330 000 on ISX. The vital signs are still good. The oil pressure, oil consumption in norm - I add 1 gal every 10 000 miles and do PM service at no more than 15 000 miles. I add roughly half a gal of antifreeze every 15 000 miles too...but that's been for quite some time. According to many reviews, also including the ones found here, this engine should have been dead by now, so I think I am pushing luck. Every additional month, week, trip is a bonus now.

Seriously, I should either order a new truck ASAP or do an overhaul or both. Since receiving a new truck may not be possible this year, the overhaul would make sense for the purpose of the income tax deduction.
On the other hand, if that thing is dead all of a sudden, I think, I'll be all right regrouping for 6 months up to a year...I need a physical and mental overhaul too. LOL
