Owner ops do get paid by the load you are correct on that. As a company driver it's hourly. Each customer usually sets the amount of loads they want done per day. Most of the time it's maximum 6, but some are 9 dumps a day. Basically start earlier to be at the front of the line or start later and be at the back. Yesterday we only had approximately 40 minute break the entire 10 hour dumping session.

Either way I'm just trying it out, within another week I will know more and make a final decision.

one thing i hated when i had my own truck doing asphalt was the long days never knowing when you were done . getting up at 430am and getting home at 9pm sucked . then you work nights and you might only work 6 hrs . i don’t miss it one bit and at $78 a hr with fuel prices going up my dad is not making any money

I hauled gravel for a few months when I came off long haul. It’s ok but you have to take your breaks as it is monotonous. I told boss pound salt when he said take your break when loading. Only complete A holes rush their employees. Pay was 16 per hour plus benefits in ‘94
I despised the truckS as they
had no air ride on cab, Hope that’s not your case, took November lay-off and went to hauling chips for 3 weeks, then line haul since
The idiots rushing around like maniacs might get one extra load in, or have accidents and go to Flagman school

Yeah the break situation is terrible. That's one problem I have with dumping so far. The guy who trained me is hands down the worst driver I have ever seen. Since there is no logbooks these guys work 24 hours a day sometimes. Scary to think these guys are out here with us all the time on the roads.

If you guys in the GTA are considering dump trucks or trash, why not look at ready mix ?
There are 4 companies that pay $28 hr to start, $29 after probation and after 2 years $33.*
Just need a DZ, and be able drive stick.
Time and a half after 8 hrs a day, and all day on saturday, double time after 9:00 pm. Dental, drugplan ,vision and a pension plan.

I can tell you the downsides if you are interested, too

    Pete

*the current top rate, if you start now the top rate in 2 years will be about $35hr
