    Well today was interesting!
After having stayed with the program the couple weeks I got a break in Ohio yesterday and slept in this morning and was a perfect morning as I drank my morning coffee and gave a phone interview to an NPR reporter about the basic state of the trucking industry....then showered, ate and headed over to pick up my loaded trailer going home .
Headed west on 70 in Ohio in a hard rain ( this gets windy ) I stayed in the far right lane as visibility wasn't good running about 55 which was probably to fast ....and at the 30mm all hell broke loose when the truck in front of me quite a ways out slammed on the brakes ....I was almost to late as I dam near pushed the pedal thru the firewall headed for the shoulder considering the ditch ...but I got stopped with maybe 20ft to spare .
Turns out the truck in front of me was behind a cab over flat bed straight truck pulling a trailer loaded with lawn maintenance equipment which rear ended a milk tanker .
The truck in front me moved around the wreck and hit the shoulder in front of the wreck and stopped along with several other trucks that were out assessing things ...I sat there a few minutes contemplating my next move when I noticed the smell of gas getting stronger i thought I better get out of here! And when I did I saw the driver of the straight truck trapped in the cab behind the wheel and its a look ill never forget !
A few miles down the road I met @Suspect Zero going the other way and got him slowed down .
Ya never know when day is gonna go south and I'm glad for all those professional driver improvement classes I had to take at dart in my days there along with theyre constant insistence of a safe following distance....when it goes to hell it goes to hell really fast .

Thanks ! The adrenaline rush from that and the come down is something else !
I felt guilty as hell driving away from that but nothing I could have done .

I more than likely would have ruined a set of knickers
I hate the guilt thing, it has a tendency to stay with a guy for a while!

I hear ya ...in the late 80s dart had a hell of a safety directer that was all about training and accident reduction.
I think he works for great west in north soiux city now as an accident investigation person now but he was good ! And his name was Dave Mclaughlin.
He was really passionate on safety and the fact we don't own the road , he made quite an impression on me and I credit him on why I've never had an accident.....following distance....following distance !

Don't feel bad, there wasn't anything you could have done. I passed there 10 minutes after we passed each other and there was a boatload full of people mulling around plus fire and paramedics were already on the scene. You would jave been just one more person getting in the way

Seeing something like that is something you won’t forget…i still remember the image i saw near raleigh Durham nc where someone jumped off an overpass just to right and in front of me and i saw him bounce off the concrete…

I got ahold of Dave Mclaughlin at great west today ( former safety director at dart ) in the 80s .
We had a good chat and he agreed things are changing.

Id love to hear insight from a long time real deal safety guy like that. Especially in regards to all the nanny systems and if he thinks that makes drivers less skilled or if overall it’s more safe.
