    Hello,

I’m a new fleet owner based in Houston, Texas. I was curious to get opinions on the better companies to lease on to in the initial phases of growing my business. My first driver I’ve hired and I will be attending orientation at LandStar soon. I just want to ensure I’m moving in the right direction. I know all my drivers won’t qualify for LandStar so I wanted to research other companies for my future hires. Any input is welcome. Thanks.

Wait, I’m going to warn you about something and many will say I’m full of ***** about it.

you are an armchair fleet owner, something we don’t need in this industry. Many more fail than succeed than owner operators. However I won’t ding you for that but that has to be said.

    Take my advice seriously.

Ignore the driver owner operators on this.

if you are already going to landstar, stick to it for at least two years.

learn their system and don’t worry about what other carriers can offer you.

trying to diversify without a foundation, you will fail … PERIOD!

get the idea that this is as close as being on your own as you can get.

take advantage of their programs, LCAPP, etc. … learn how to leverage all of them

participate in their meeting and get togethers.

And here is something very important, get off your ***** and treat this as a business.

It takes a lot of work to get it setup to run right.

I will not share my operational details with landstar, there are a lot of details that I use to produce revenue.

I am doing very well as are others who have fleets with them.

I will tell you learn how to use the Landstar information daily, to plan your revenue generation <<<<< you don’t wait for the freight come to you … you want the agents to come to you.

Learn how the agent system work, once you have access to the internal systems you can see who is moving the freight and who isn’t.

Go talk to your local agencies, only a few don’t have the time to meet with people as hoc but they usually host some activities so YOU and YOUR DRIVERS go meet with them.

SELL YOUR SERVICES TO THE AGENTS, AGAIN YOU WANT THE AGENTS TO COME TO YOU, NOT THE FREIGHT.

THERE IS A LOT MORE TO MAKING THIS WORK.

But if you expect this to be a “buy a truck and make big bucks” business, we don’t need that in the industry, we have enough crap owners hiring crap drivers just getting by and ruining it for all of us.

No such company exist! It’s not a one size fits all, I know drivers who love a company, and another that will tell you that company sucks, every driver has what they can tolerate and what they can’t, you find this with your drivers if they have to deal with what ever company you lease onto, some will be ok, and some are going to tell you this company sucks

So your saying you run drugs and other illegal things to make extra revenue,? Sounds kind of shady, since we're all assuming we know what all the other drivers are like, might as well get in on the action.
