Go with 2018 or newer. Older than that has the 1st gen aftertreatment system that causes more headaches than the new onebox versions in the newer trucks. We have run Volvo only for 2 decades, I've never overhauled and engine. That being said, find which local dealer has the best reputation for customer service and go with that brand. TALK to local fleet managers that run different brands. Ask about parts availability, technician skill and knowledge. Volvo, Freightliner, KW, Pete, International - they are all just tools. The brand you choose should depend on the service you can receive after the purchase. All brands can spec trucks that will beat 7mpg without issue.
Thinking on buying a Volvo?

I driven everything but a Mack or a Star. Volvo is the quietest smoothest running truck out there. The ishift is the best auto trans out there. Every brand has lemons in the bunch. There’s a national back order on certain parts for Cummins engines. That covers just about all brands
of trucks.
Volvos and Freightliner Cascadia’s are the most expensive trucks out there besides a 389 or W900.
Mack (ie Volvo) and International have the most reasonable prices in the current market IMO.
No matter what truck you buy it’ll need maintenance from time to time. I would take Volvo over a Freightliner, Paccar engine, or MaxForce engine any day of the week. -

I've had them all and since 2016 emissions changes, my Volvos VNL 780, 760 and 860 models have been bar none the most reliable and comfortable trucks ever owned, including the pre emissions trucks!
I don't own crap cheap spec fleet junk and none will ever be white. -

We run 2.47 , 2.64 and 3.08 , none "lug" or are slow climbing. The Mack motor shines at 900-1400 rpm huge bottom end Torque.
The 2.47 TC is stronger pulling than the 2.64 rear truck ... Archaic logic is flawed.
