Company tells me drive route that is longer more miles?

Since when is dispatch the boss? They're not your manager.

 

Just because every other driver goes that way does not mean you should go that way.
I would go the shortest way and let your DM sort out the facts when he comes in on Monday.
Most dispatchers couldn't find their way out of a paper bag. They have never driven a truck and couldn't if their life depended on it.
If there is a valid reason they have that route set up, you should be paid for those extra miles driven.

 

Maybe its marching order from their bosses, I don't know. OP, I personally don't see this to be that big of a deal. Either follow their route, or go the route you want to. What are they gonna do? Fire you? Highly doubt it. It's no sense making a stink about it because it ain't no secret that companies will pay impractical miles, or if Google spits out 3 routes, they'll pay you for the shortest route, and tell you to take a more efficient route. I don't always use my company's routing/fuel stops either. I did when I first got here, but over time and once I felt they trusted me, I just used my better judgment.

 

The fact that they are micro managing enough to see he's not going the "right" way. Bugs me. Get away from them and fast.

At the end of the day.....if You are a Company driver..!?! you are to follow Instructed routes, UNLESS..they Violate some Law Or the instructions put You Or someone else in "Inminent Danger"..........Company Driver...that's just the way it is......the Company way. (Know this is Not what You wanted to hear. But I drove for a couple of decades......Trucking Companies will Not EVOLVE in a 100% positive way for the driver. Good Luck and HAPPY TRAILS...!!!

The Company has the "option" to charge you for "Out of Route" miles when "dispatched" to a specific route and not followed, (and is legal and I'm sure it is mentioned in your "Agreemeant").

 

Freymiller will charge drivers a dollar a mile out of route . I didn't stay there long enough to tie my shoes after they said that

They fired you for not doing the job you were hired for. You were not hired to plan your own route, you were hired to drive the route the company wants you to drive.
They could have valid reasons too. For example they have had an LEO harass the drivers at a scale because of the company name on the truck, not because anything is wrong. They could have found (as this is a normal run) that the shorter route leads to more late deliveries due to weather and traffic issues. They could also be as simple as the short route is extremely hilly and the long one is flat thus reducing fuel costs. Or the fuel pumps on the longer route are cheaper thus lowering the fuel costs.

Simple fact is if they give you a route, and it's not illegal to run it, they have every right to fire you for not doing the job they gave you.
