The employer in question is famous for long background checks. The young driver and I both worked for them for years, recently. The city where the job is located has tons of trucking companies & job openings posted.

There may be some companies that prefer to be unemployed prior. Perhaps they wanna do a full check before committing to orientation and not waste money perhaps

I would say no it's not. It's a thing this company does and is not normal. Actually it's the only company I've ever heard of requiring this.

My guess is they went to hire someone, paid for the onboarding fees (drug test, paperwork, clearinghouse, etc) and then the driver went to his old company t quit. Old company dangled cash and the driver took it and declined the new job offer. Now the new company is out the money and simply never wants to deal with it again.
Again 100% guess, but it's about all I can see why a company would require someone to not have a job.

Thanks. It was first I've ever heard it also. I had an orientation date twice at one company and backed out twice on the day I would have left to travel for orientation. I can see the company's point.

Biggest thing I've been encountering with some companies is not having a local address when applying to them. It's like on one hand, you're encouraged to quit your current job and move since there's supposedly your original choice and many others in the place you're moving to. On the other hand, the "worker shortage" ends up being merely hype and all positions are filled everywhere once you get there.

Now you're jobless, high and dry, and may have to take whatever you could find(ie., some baloney van/reefer outfit paying squat) until there's good work available again(fuel, ltl/linehaul).

I live in Arizona. My company is based out of eastern Tennessee. No problem getting hired. As long as you are in their hiring area for OTR it does not matter

OTR and the 48 state/gone-for-months stuff of course. But I'm just trying to stick to the more routine runs that get keep me home.

As far as looking for places to live, I've been kind of picky and ageist. Trying to stick to dull and boring parts of any given town. But all the (rental) vacancies are usually located where the 20-somethings, night clubs and party venues are at.

I've also looked at commuting from a more rural area to a given city(ie., "Moriarty NM to ABQ", "Hutchinson to Wichita", or even "Limon to Denver"). But no rentals and plenty of houses for sale. Too much of a commitment for someone as all-around lazy outside of work for me.

I just want to go to/from work, play around for a bit, then crash out.

I always quit and take a few weeks off while obtaining another job. That’s the only gambling I do.

We get promotions as truck drivers? Hell everywhere I’ve seen people “move up” into the office they take a significant pay cut, and there responsibilities go up.

Sure. You go liquid bulk (basic stuff like lubricants and cleaners and water) to gas or cryo or class 1 stuff like concentrated sulfuric. Or you go from flatbed to oversized or heavy haul. And you have to work up into that too. Any job with a multi year learning curve has promotions. They’re just not called that in trucking.
