What career should I go with?

LTL is your niche. Yeah, you work harder for greater reward. No different than life in general.. YRC sucks

 

LTL ain't for everybody. Like you said, you start at the bottom, babysitting the phone until they call you. Crap runs and houirs til you get some time in, which may take a year or more. Money can be good, if you can live with the BS.

If you can handle the fact you could be blown to kingdom come every day, a tanker is the best. Otherwise, I did okay at LTL. Hours were pretty predictable, you basically go to the same places, line haul is about the easiest, but boring. Today, without question, it's either tanker or flatbed out here, bigger cities will cater to van or reefer, or local delivery. I think you have plenty of experience to do whatever. Suicide jockey used to pay the best, not sure that's true anymore. Someone here said they make $51/hr. in a gas can.

 

Tanker. Specifically, pneumatic if you want stability. There is no shortage of folks and companies wanting to pour cement.

 

Line haul jobs pay really well and most have you home every day.
Some, like ABF and YRC have Teamsters benefits and affordable or free health insururance.
Many ads have "experience required", but that's flexible for a good applicant, such as youself that has driven Class-A vehicles, even if they weren't tractor-trailers.
