You're trying to mate 2 jobs, as in, leave job 1 at 430pm, start job 2 at 5pm. With trucks and load commitments (pick up times) hard to do. Can you do early pick up if needed ? Or come to first job late if job 2 keeps you out past 730 am ? Plus, when do you sleep ? Things to consider....

Your desk job would have to be logged as on duty and that doesn’t leave you much time for driving your box truck.

Authority won't go active without insurance. You're prepared to pay thousands of dollars for no reason?

Like I said before, don't get hung up on being new. Almost no broker cares.

If that's the case, I am ok doing my own authority then. If my business fails, I can get a job with a carrier- I am ok with that, because I'll have enough assets to recover my losses.

Did you start with loadboards with new authority?

If you breakdown on Sunday few hours away from home, how are you gonna fix your truck, deliver the load and come back for your job at 8am on Monday?

I know a couple of people with sprinter vans or
    Minivans hauling expedited freight .

They seem to be doing well. I have no idea what load boards or brokers they use though .

They either have their own customers or they use Sylectus. Sylectus is hard to get on and expensive too, and when I was doing it it was the only game in town.

OP, if you want to try making extra money with a box truck I'd learn the ropes working for someone in Expedite. Expedite/hot shot are synonymous terms in this game, doesn't mean it's a pick up with a goose neck. Could be a van, straight truck, pick up with/without trailer, anything that will move stuff.

What you are going to find (and basically what you've already been told here) is that trucking is mostly an all or nuthin' enterprise. Once you dive in you've got costs you can't cover without doing it all the time.

I don't see this going well unless you
    A. do it full time from the start or
    B. drive for someone else.

The second option could show you how much of it sucks and you may decide to do something else.

Yeah, it seems like trucking would done best full time, so I will wait until my contract ends to get the insurance before driving. Well, a month in advance so my authority is ready.

I am anxious to make a big career change- I have been a teacher for 10 years, and no one but my girlfriend and truck driver friends are encouraging me to do this.

My parents think I should stick to my dayjob, but I absolutely hate the working environment and I feel like I am losing brain cells. They used to let me listen to an earbud and podcasts, but now I can't even do that. I can get my fill of podcasts while behind the wheel.

I am yet to discover if I like trucking, but I have been around diesel my whole life. I work part time as a diesel mechanic, own 3 diesel pickups and drive a service truck.

If I enjoy doing this, I will figure out how to make a living. Even if I get an entry CDL job for a company, I'll take a $20k paycut and say adios to the communists. The difference between teaching and trucking is the earning potential. If I were to teach another 15 years, I'd barely make another $8k annually. If I am successful trucking, I can run a small fleet and quadruple my teaching salary.
