I am a military veteran starting a motor carrier in the Midwest from scratch. We'll be running DoD and commercial lanes. Reefer, flatbed, van, possibly more.

If you could work for the perfect company - either hired on or leased on, what would that company look like?

Please be specific. I will shape this company based on these responses.

fully paid health care with minimal contribution from my paycheck, as well as minimal co-pays to the doctor, meds, etc.

good equipment, does not even have to be new, just very well maintained.

choice of working days/nights, rather than being told i MUST work x number of days or nights

all tolls paid with EZ pass

"truck money" for odds and ends like washer fluid, paper towels, rags, etc.

office staff that will not force dispatch, but rather "ask" if i can do some extra work.

    direct deposit

retirement plan choices, with matching company contributions, "up to x amount weekly".

at the very least 4 weeks fully paid vacation, after at least 1 year of employment.

paid holidays, time off when asked for, no in cab cameras, but dash cams are ok,

Driver comforts are important to me. I always make sure the company will have an APU, inverter and preferably a fridge but as long as there's a place for me to hook a dorm fridge up to then that's alright. Hometime is also very important to me. Where they fuel is important to me as well (I prefer to fuel at Love's, it's the best!).

Pay is important as well obviously. I should say if pay is the most important thing to you, you should probably just go LTL linehaul extraboard (until you get enough seniority to bid on a high mile run). That's where the money is as long as the economy stays like this and it's not even close.

Can you elaborate a bit? Why is Love's the best? What would your ideal hometime look like? Acknowledged on the APU/Inverter/Fridge, thank you.

Not trying to be rude and I'm genuinely curious, are there actually American companies that offer 4 weeks of paid vacation after 1 year of employment? Aren't those needle in the haystack type of jobs? I would think that having 4 weeks of paid vacation after 1 year of service consists of 1% or less of the American work force?

On a side note Americans have a horrible work life balance compared to most other 1st world countries. Most people in 1st world countries get about 4 weeks of paid vacation per year regardless of job or sector. So janitors, blue collared, white collared, they all get 4 weeks mandatory paid vacation. The US is terrible when it comes to work life balance, check out this chart for reference to see how pathetic the US is in this regard:
