How about instead of tricks for better mpg instead pull freight that pays according to what you need to cover the extra cost? Rough calculation for me is about $.38 a mile fuel cost at current prices. I was at around $.28-$.32 cents per mile fuel cost when fuel was a dollar cheaper. 10 cents per mile difference is $100 per load that goes 1000 miles. You should be able to easily squeeze a broker for the difference to cover your rising fuel cost.

Wow that wasn't too bad. Shouldn't take them that long once they actually start on it. A few weeks maybe.

You're right there should be more in it because of the increase in fuel price. Luckily the price is trending back down again the past few weeks in most regions. (Midwest it went down 5.5 cents when they posted the new price on Monday.) I'm leased to an RV hauling company in Elkhart and the rates are basically fixed until they see fit to change them. Kind of a take it or leave it type deal. For now it works but I don't intend to stay on that plantation forever. At some point there will either be a trailer purchase for my little truck or a class 8 power unit I can lease onto a fella I know who runs a small flatbed company nearby.

If you're buying a pickup truck to hotshot with buy 4500 or 5500 cab and chassis. They hold up better than a 1 ton. Bigger brakes, often have a drive shaft emergency brake which is nice for loading cars or equipment. They have commercial truck tires and heavier-duty rear axles and transmissions.

I like my Chevy 5500 I've hauled some heavy loads with it and the truck handles it way better than any 1 ton would. I just got a sleeper for it as well but I haven't installed it yet.

The only issue I've had with my chevy is the driver's side front tire is wearing really weird and for whatever brainiac reason Chevy decided not to put shocks on the rear axle..
