I'm using the Cummins X15 as an example, but this could apply to any engine. Since the X15 has several different horsepower and torque ratings, are there different engines for each of these, or is it the same engine just tuned differently? Like is a 525hp with 1850 fp torque the same engine as the 600 hp with 2050 fp torque? What about an engine with hp in the 400s compared to the 600hp? I hope I'm making sense here.

While engine displacement is the same, different HP ratings do contain different internals, such as pistons, cams, injectors and so on. This holds true for Cummins and I would imagine most other current engine manufacturers. The days of flashing software to increase HP and torque ratings are for the most part over.

    I disagree,
Why is it that peak torque is achieved at 1100 rpm all the way to 1800 rpm. It just shoots up and levels out flat through the whole rpm range. They are going to level it off like that through "hardware"?
It's software that keeps the motor from blowing apart before the warranty is over.

I think you may have misinterpreted my answer. Clearly the same engine will have different software based on HP and torque ratings which control fueling, RPM and Im certain a host of other operating conditions. My point is, a 400hp economy engine does not contain the same internals as a 600hp vocational engine. Even though the software will be different, the upgrade is from the lesser to the highest is not as simple as a flash file. Maybe 20 years ago on certain engines, but certainly not today or especially on the X15 engine.

A "400 HP economy engine" like an X13? Sure.
They aren't going to build a special nerfed x15 to do what an x13 does, too much production/parts cost. An X15 is an X15. A DD15 is a DD15. They build them the same and tune them with software.

It's the same engine with different tunes.

When Detriot came out with the DD15 it was giving peope "whiplash" with how much torque it has. Driver were really impressed. But then piston rods started breaking so they had to turn them down. It is still the same basic motor now.

I don't believe you are correct. Injectors and turbos will be different based on hp. Different cam profiles maybe too.

I know cummins has Different cpl numbers or arrangements.

The C-15 cats were available with as low as 335hp I think up to 550. Lower hp models had all aluminum pistons I believe. Wide variety of injector sizes

Ok so I'm running a Series 60 glider 06RE HK engine and it's set at 430/470! Can I simply get a software update to get better HP/Torque without snapping a rod? I know there are injectors, cams and turbo upgrades to aid in performance but can a software flash increase performance? BTW I did upgrade my Garrett to wastegated BW.

I get where you are coming from, There may be a difference between an X15 efficiency, an X15, or X15 Performance
    .
It's too many parts to produce and for dealers or parts dealers to stock. I'm sure there is an exemption to over bored bearings from rebuilds.
An X15 that does 430 HP is the same motor that will do 605 HP, they just tune it differently with software.
