    Is it?

    mi·cro·man·age
    /ˈmīkrōmanij/
    Learn to pronounce

    verb
    1. control every part, however small, of (an enterprise or activity).
Are you saying that is not what Walmart does?
I did, and I've got my DD-214. And now I'm in the Guard. It's funny though, the GTM at my former DC said almost the same thing to me...like just because I served in the military means that I should accept micromanagement for the rest of my life.

Yes, that’s what I’m saying. At least in my DC and the DC’s I work with.

I see where the confusion lies, as some think managing means micromanaging.

Here is an example of management…

Dispatch/management: “Driver, get that trailer to its destination on time, without breaking the law and without wrecking” “Report back when you get that done and we’ll assign you something new”

Here is an example of micromanagement…

Dispatch/management: “Driver, go get that trailer but before you do, tie your shoes and ensure you fuel your truck completely. Check back here so we can verify truck is fueled” “After getting clearance, proceed on your assigned route. Do not deviate in that route. Once at location, phone in and verify with us that you’re actually there.” “Once unloaded, call us again to verify again.” “Once you leave, do not deviate from route and verify your position at every rest stop or break you take” “Are your shoes still tied?” “Verify shoes are tied and call to verify” And on, and on, blah blah

That’s a somewhat distorted example of the difference between managing and micromanaging. No disrespect to DD-214 holders, but 5 minutes in the military and you’d immediately recognize the hilarity in that…as that 2nd example is exactly what the (at least the Army) military is like.

I get it, WM rules and way of doing things aren’t for everyone. To each their own. But honestly, of all my trucking jobs (and I’ve driven for more than a few), WM is the LEAST micromanaging company I’ve worked for.

    Again, from my perspective.

Except for the shoe-tying part, that's exactly what Walmart does via Peoplenet and NTransit. Go ahead and don't put in your messages when you arrive and depart a store, and see how long it takes before somebody gets ahold of you. And don't forget to start and end your breaks! Oh, and they're going to shut that inverter off after 2 hours to make sure that you're actually going nite nite during that break.

Another form is coaching a driver for having to slam on the brakes because a car cut them off...and then trying to twist it around and blame the driver.

If you honestly believe that Walmart doesn't micromanage, the only person you're kidding is yourself.

Put in your messages? What messages? At my Walmart, it's open up N-transit and CLICK ONE BUTTON that show you've arrived. One button. THE HORROR! And you realize, N-transit is how we get paid, right? Clicking that one button shows you've arrived, so you can get paid for that arrival (as well as departure, as we get paid for that too). Imagine that, a company asking you to click one button so they can pay you for what you're doing...

That is a federal, as well as state requirement...to show you've taken your breaks. So ANY company, requiring you adhere to lawful mandates is micromanaging? And again, in my neck of the woods (CA), we get paid for our breaks. So yea, twist my arm to earn more money.

Who is "they're"? You've got someone visiting your truck after 2 hours to manually unplug your inverter? Or maybe your inverter is wired to the internet, and "they" remotely shut it down, My inverter is on an old fashion timer, Does it shut off after 2 hours? Yup. Do I wine about it? Nope. Ever since the ancient Greeks invented portable plugin inverters, I've been lucky to have unlimited AC power without THE MAN KNOWING ABOUT IT!

I've had my fair of video reviews. Have those review sessions ever devolved into blaming and finger pointing and threats? Never. Most of my video reviews involve pointing out me tailgating or driving too fast. The few hard brakes I've watched involving my driving, were immediately dismissed once the video was reviewed. Safety and accountability. Too much to ask?

I'm not kidding myself or anyone. Working at my DC is great, We've got a great GTM, great managers, good safety department, and nice equipment and facilities. I honestly feel for anyone who works, or has worked at a crappy place with unbearable rules. If that's what it's like at other DC's, then I can sympathize. Micromanaged is not even close to my working conditions.

    .

You obviously haven't worked for Walmart very long, or you would know exactly what I'm talking about. NTransit is a very new feature for Walmart that still wasn't working very well when I left.

Again, you haven't worked for Walmart very long or you would know exactly what I'm talking about, Furthermore, federal law states that you have to take a break...not flag it as a break.

    "

You're really grasping at straws here...
"They" is the mechanics who are instructed by Walmart policy to program the inverter to shut off after 2 hours of continuous use. Congratulations on finding a workaround for a stupid policy. Just like drivers buy burner phones to get around Walmart's dumb cellphone policy.

The fact that you've had to go into safety to review videos that should be outright dismissed without you even knowing about tells everybody everything they need to know.

Read my initial post again. I was extremely fair to Walmart. Don't look for trouble where there isn't any. It's wonderful that you enjoy your job. Hopefully, it will stay that way. But be careful about sticking up for them so strongly. They wouldn't hesitate to throw you under the bus in 2 shakes if it meant saving them $1.

TL; DR; Youtube truckers are still lying

My choice picks from Youtube Walmart drivers: 'Most drivers are making around $110,000 a year', 'There are a lot of schedules like five-on-five-off to pick from; I just like OTR'

Maybe it's just that the waves of veteran drivers that won't touch Walmart or these '$2,950 a week' to '$6,000 a week' LTL companies with a ten-foot-pole just don't like the shirts.... lol
