is it even possible to pull step decks with a 244” wb 379 and 62” bunk? I don’t see room for a headache rack. Not much frame rail space to store chains, binders, 15 straps, flags, 4 banners, strobes. Usually pulling different trailers so trailer storage doesn’t work either. Does anyone do this?

Get you a few big step boxes? Straps can go in side boxes and chains in step boxes? I don't like a headache rack so I don't see a problem

There are hundreds of 244" 379 with 63" bunks pulling steps/flats out of western Canada where 244"WB was (and I think still is) the maximum WB allowed. It is crowded behind the bunk but by mounting the rack close to the bunk wall (2 to 3") and using a 8" or 10" deep cabinet you can stay inside the wings/air-foils and you will find room for a set of narrow steps for access.
A legless frame mount helps a lot.

225 with a 48" bunk and a 30" king pin is cutting mustard.

Get a step with a 18 or 24” deep king pin.
18” inch kp is like having a 262” wheel base.

Hmmm...244” is/was a rule here too. I don’t recall seeing too many.....maybe some short hood Petes.

The truck pictured is 253” with one of the skinniest headache racks I’ve come across. The frame rail step is 18”. Taking 11” out of the wb allows for only a 7” wide step box. About the width of my boot. imagining that truck with a 244” conjures up images of a asphalt snack every time I climb down from the catwalk

Or remove 1 fuel tank and put a massive box on 1 side.

The place my dad was leased to didn't do too much flatbed but they had some. He ended up doing this with a 218wb. Catwalk box was for chains/binders then a 2ft box on the drivers side and a 1ft on the pass side. You probably have about the same amount of room @rank

Wasn't the most organized but it sufficed for what it was. The box sat nicely between the frame rails

I’m getting by OK with my 253” wb but there’s a 244” long hood that’s caught my eye. Just can’t make sense of it for pulling open decks though.
