Central Transport Line Haul?

    I recently got my class A and I have a couple questions about Central.

    Anyone ever drive linehaul for them? Any advice on the night shift / tips?

    Is it mostly driving or are you on the dock alot?

    How many hours did you work avg a day?

    Was the pay good? Was it worth it?

    Most central guys I’ve talked to run 12-14 hrs a day. Equipment is not generally in good shape, even though they’ve upgraded equipment recently it is abused. Central generally has the worst reputation of all the LTL’s.

    I looked into them about a year ago. Would've been at the Camp Hill, PA location. They had new trucks and some newer trailers sitting there. The terminal manager said their trucks were lease trucks that got turned in every three years. Aside from the God awful yellow color they didn't look trashed.

    That was a linehaul/ dockworker position. I was told I'd take a load to another hub, or a meet somewhere, and come back to Camp Hill and unload the trailer I just brought in. After my trailer was empty it was up to me how long I wanted to work. Seemed kinda sketchy to me.

    When I asked about the pay the only concrete figure they'd give was dock pay, which was $31 an hour I think. I asked about how I'd be paid when driving, they said it was a flat rate per trip. But when asked for examples they gave none. They were more concerned with selling the $31 an hour dock pay and $20k sign on bonus, which was paid over 2 years.

    Everyone I spoke to seemed content with their respective positions, from drivers to office people. I chose to stay where I'm at, after crunching what numbers they gave me. The extra pay wouldn't have offset the cost of commuting 45 miles one way to work. I drive 24 miles round trip to my current job. Figure the gas and wear on the car, and suddenly it wasn't as appealing.

    But for someone looking to get into the LTL world, it's probably a safe bet, and maybe a good start.

    My brother did linehaul for them a few years ago out of South Bend IN.. They would have him come in at 9PM, but the loads were seldom ready until 10:30 or 11.Never went to the same place regularly, might be Cleveland one night, Indy the next. Total fuster cluck according to him.
