Can a failed test be challenged or requested in GA?

If you miss anything to do with lights, brakes, tires, steering, you will fail as those ARE safety issues. When you sign your log (pre-trip) you are certifying the vehicle is safe to operate.

If you missed anything to do with the brakes (brake drum in your case), then you wouldn’t know if it’s safe to drive or not. Right?

 

Go to YouTube and look up drum brakes for a semi. Your examiner knows that you don’t know jack about a pre trip. At the very least, you should know what you are looking at.

 

Remember this test has nothing to do with safety and if the truck will get down the road. It is 100% a test by bureaucrats and as such needs to be treated that way. Learn the wording as it matters more than I depth knowledge of the components.
Pass the test, get your CDL then worry about how everything works in the real world.

 

There is this thing called vocabulary and another called muscle memory! I once got dinged because I called a chassis a set of rails. I never thought of a chassis as such until both axles and the suspension system were attached. In the end, it doesn't really matter if you call a fuel tank a BRT! However, you call a tank a BRT during a driving test or on an inspection report you might get some blowback. Stick to the correct terminology when dealing with examiners and DOT cops later on. If I am testing someone when it comes to inspections. I am going to need to know that you can not only identify a part such as a brake drum but give me a brief explanation of how it works and what is connected to it. You can't do this I will fail you!
