That the north recruited (propagandised) under the guise of liberating the slaves is immaterial, the same as the south recruiting as if they were ONLY going to war as defense, technically true, but their declarations of independence made it clear it was about retaining slavery, so an equal amount of lies.

Why a company would force someone out? Maybe to meet compliance standards. If a driver has his own truck, but is contracted to run that company's freight, I would imagine getting that particular driver to comply would be more difficult, especially when it comes to non trucking aspects of the partnership.
