Wife is going to start taking trips with me. So Ive decided before the cold weather hits to breakdown and spend the money on a APU.

I have a volvo vnl and freightliner cascadia gonna put one on each of them.

So my questions are who makes the best, most trouble free? Must have auto start and either a remote control or inside panel to start without getting out.

Being a cheap ### id prefer to buy used. But since its for momma, will buy new if I have to.

I've had good luck with my Thermo King... Has 10,000 hours on it atm, the Carrier I had was junk and I never hear anything good about them from others that have them.

But, as always, your mileage may vary.

This is my experince as well. Mine has 11000 and its only problem was needing a new alt and belt. Every carrier i have used has been junk. I also recomend the stand alone system. If you break down you still have a/c and heat

I’m the opposite. The thermokings were always giving me alternator codes. The carrier has been treating me very nice last 4000 of its 7300 hours were just maintenance I did have to have the central box looked at for some blown fuses last winter but that’s it. The real problem people come with is they let any random Joe Shmoe touch it. You gotta have looked at by a GOOD authorized dealer. The Penn power groups in PA have never let me down. The carrier in Matawan NJ had always given me problems apu always came back to them and they always charged for their mistakes too. Oh and don’t follow that 2k hours pm schedule. I always have it pm’ed every 1000-1400 hours.

I’ve never run Carrier…just Thermo King, always had good luck with it. Cold/hot never had an issue. Couple summers ago a sensor went bad causing it to shut off so it wouldn’t overheat, but it was a quick fix.

Thermo king with an espar D4 heater

    Not to hijack
But to you other TK owners
Have you ever ran an overhead or is that no necessary?

My local TK shop says no but I’m not so sure

I’d look at Green APU if I were you. Three cylinder Kubota instead of two, parts available at any parts store or Pilot/Flying J and 24 hrs/7 days a week tech support. I currently have a Carrier, next truck will probably be Green APU.

3k on my Thermo King. Hardly any problems at all. Every now and then it throws a code (little triangle symbol) and I reset it and go again.

I am actually thinking of buying an Espar controller and separating my Espar from the Thermo King unit this winter. Mine is set up where the Espar runs on the TK controller. This just doesn't make sense to me since my TK is getting older.
