For guys who are running older pre-emission trucks, with D60's older cats and older Cummins.. What are the things that are most likely to put your truck on the side of the road other than a tire?

Thats the good thing about pre-emissios .. you can usually limp it in to fix it ..USUALLY..
The last time for me I can't even remember..

That's a loaded question.
If you buy a 1995 truck and you put the key into it and start it and just start working you're going to be on the side of the road. No matter how pretty it looks.
When you have an older truck like that you can't think you're just going to buy it and use it. You need to go over that thing from front to back and bulletproof it the best that you can.

This year just replaced my trans 1.6 mil miles thats it 07 c15

I had water pump fail at 1.2 mil, that's the only thing that put me on the side of the road.
Everything else just regular maintenance. Detroit is probably the cheapest to maintain. Injectors are $300 a piece, turbo $700, air compressor $700, fuel pump $250, water pump I believe $350.

As Dino mentioned, you really need to be on top of it pretty much daily to have any real faith in it. So many times I've caught electrical wiring, hose, suspension, seals and belt issues before they screwed me. Technically, this could apply to any truck regardless of age but the older they are the more attention they require.

Yeah, I understand that. I've run both new and old. The only time I broke down on the side of the road and needed a wrecker was in a new Cascadia. I was fuel pump problems. I'm just curious about the older trucks because I'm thinking out getting out of my hotshot truck and going back to Semi's and I was thinking of a non e-log truck.Last edited: Sep 28, 2021
